My advice is to find and get pre-approval for the best rate you can find on your own. I also used Penfed. Then, go to the dealer and tell them if they find a better rate, you’ll go with it. My dealer got me approved through Bank of America for 2.89% for 72 months when Penfed quoted me the 3.49% rate noted in the original post.

They have tons of different groups and associations listed when you go to see if you qualify, and to be honest, you can even join the Red Cross for free and qualify that way. Of course it would be good to make a donation to them as well, or volunteer some time!

My dealer couldn't touch Penfed's rates, they were very close to being double over what Penfed gave. So I definitely recommend finding the best rate on your own like @Mid-life Wrangler said, that's what I did and Penfed won for me!

Absolutely. When you join, there is an option for "I am a relative of someone who is eligible", and that's it! They usually ask for the persons name and what branch and you are good to go.

Actually, almost anyone can join Penfed. Even if you have no military or government affiliation.

I have been using PenFed for auto loans for years and I have never served in the military.

You just need to donate I believe $15 to one of two military charities/organizations to qualify. They tell you exactly how to do this on the PenFed website when you try to sign up.

I highly recommend them, their rates are extremely low and their customer service has been good so far.

AAA gave me a much better rate than PenFed for a pre-approval. Gave it to my dealer and asked if he could beat it. Once the JL comes in, I'll find out!

Depending on your dealership and of course your credit they usually have Pen Fed or other aggressive credit unions that they can help you become a member of and finance through.

Will add here that I financed my Spyder through PenFed. They're awesome. The customer service is top notch and their site is pretty straight forward. Enough that I probably would be hesitant to finance elsewhere unless the rate was materially lower.

I went with a local CU here in Washington and got 3.79% for 84 months. Hard to beat that rate so I told the dealer to not even check anywhere else....
