Searching for a Wrangler
I'd wager the latter. Going back to the YJ (my original frame of reference as an owner), Wranglers have always been comparatively expensive for what they are. Yet, they continue to sell robustly, and enjoy possibly nonpareil residual value when sold as used vehicles.
I’ve only recently gotten into Jeeps but I’ve long known the resale values were very high. However, this is on another level. The escalation rates of this pricing surely cannot continue, right? These manufacturers and dealers will eventually stop having supply constraints, right? Maybe we never go back to seeing every color of every model on dealer lots or within a short drive, but supply will have to improve to capture impulse buyers. Of course, this huge push for custom orders I’m seeing now indicates the dealers don’t think that’ll be anytime soon.

I bought a new 1994 YJ "out the door" for $16,400 in 94. The features it had were MT, carpet, soft top, A/C and a radio (no CD)... nothing extra. Running that amount through an inflation calculator that is equivalent to $32,790 in today's dollars. I just priced out the equivalent 2023 model at $35,485 before any Tread Lightly discount/dealer discount or taxes. Doesn't seem too overpriced to me.
The sticker on my purchased-new 1995 Wrangler S (last year for the YJs) was $11,818.00. 2.5L, five speed, carpet, back seat, soft top w/half doors, radio delete. Adjusted for inflation, that's $23.6K.

Configuring a 2023 JL Sport to be as close as possible to that '95 nets $34,355.00, sans taxes or discounts. A $10K penalty sounds about right, with respect to all of the stuff on modern vehicles that we can't opt out from.

I just configured a 2023 JLUR the same as my 2022 JLUR and it is $3,400 more expensive. I also configured a 2023 JLUR the same as my old 2019 JLUR and it is $4K more than the 2019 MSRP..

Man, I'd hate to see what the prices will be in 6-8 years when the next gen of Wranglers comes out.

My build has gone up ~$6,800 since August . The math for 8 years is an ~$59,300 increase! On a related subject I remember 19c diesel, 25c gas, and the outrage when 100 octane jumped to 36.9c. Gas has ~doubled in ~ 1.5 years do the 8yr math , I don’t want to see the answer. Add increasing interest rates, my 21 better last the rest of my life and hopefully not become a driveway ornament because I can’t afford the gas to drive it!

The new Rubicon doesn't come with wheels?
It does, but the shitass ones like you get on the 4xe are standard and apparently you can't get those right now... you have to pay extra to get the nicer Rubi ones that have been standard until now. '23 switched to the ugly ones as standard, I guess they realized people want the others and want to see

They are. Plus you can't take the increase in energy prices over the past 18 months and expect that rate of increase is going to continue ad infinitum

Just for fun I priced out a new Rubicon in auto. I figured used resale is high so I’ll do some quick math.
Now they’re charging an upcharge for the Rubicon wheels that were standard on my 2018?
Glad to see at least now you can order different gears so as to not have to regear separately. But overall prices seem quite high.
I’ll hang onto mine for a bit longer
I just went to the Jeep Build and Price site for Canada....Now I wasn't in the market for the 392 but Jesus H Christ that price is jaw-dropping. And it STARTS at that! STARTS!

I Have a set of LED headlights, taillights and fogs I've been trying to sell locally. Would you be interested in paying $350 plus shipping? I've not considered listing them, but most of the local Jeepers I know got the LED package so they're not selling here in FL.
Definitely interested. Sent you a PM. Live in FL

was an ‘18 Rubicon Mojito! now a boring Mazda
Ordered my 2022 JLR for $39,893, plus DMV fees. Didn't seem like too much.
Was that for a rubicon?

I have been looking. Basically trying to decide whether I Should regear and reclutch my manual Rubicon or get a new auto already geared from the factory. I’ve already got a few thousand invested in my mojito though.
I’d have to start over.

Yeah, JLR(ubicon). Here is the sticker. I paid $39.8k + DMV fees. There was a price increase after I placed my order, so the sticker reflects a slightly higher price than it would have at the time of order. The dealership honored the price at time of order, but the invoice price would have been slightly higher as well.

I just ordered a Rubi in early July with the standard wheels. So the 4XE style. Can you clarify what you mean by “apparently you can’t get those right now” I’ve been reading around but never find any solid answer on Rubi wheels

From all reports I've heard through other threads, people ordering '23s had to pay extra to get the wheels (old standard). The new standard wheels are the 4xe and they are at base price (don't pay extra) and up to this point I've heard that everyone had to pay extra to get the old wheels.

My post was a bit of humor with a basis in truth— should have added a wink emoji. Short term spikes and dips are on balance an indicator of long term direction.
Gas prices are decreasing, right?

Just to add to @Sazabi19 's post, in early July dealer's were simply not able to order the no-charge 4xe wheel, forcing customers to pay the $1,100 extra for the old (and previously free) style of wheel or they couldn't complete the order. Think this eventually changed in the past week or so, with both wheels now available to order (still not 100% sure about that).

You should be able to confirm this on your POC, if you've received one, or by entering your VON in the Jeep tracker and right-click on the preview photo (which only shows the 4xe wheel at the moment) and looking to see if the WGM ("upgrade" old-style wheel) order code is listed in the URL or not.
