Owner Oil Changes

So my last oil change was my last Jeep Wave change. I’m looking to just do my own now, but I’ve always wondered how you all document that for potential warranty stuff. A receipt of the filter/oil?

So my last oil change was my last Jeep Wave change. I’m looking to just do my own now, but I’ve always wondered how you all document that for potential warranty stuff. A receipt of the filter/oil?

I keep receipts in an envelope. I also store individual oil analysis reports (for each DIY oil change, which I've done from new) in my Jeep binder. There's even a few relevant photos stored on a JLU-specific thumb drive.

Finally, every time a wrench in my hand touches the vehicle, for any reason, I make a date/mileage/reason/cost entry on an Excel spreadsheet.

If the dealer ever asks for paperwork to support a warranty claim, they'll have all they can handle from me.

I was a technical writer/analyst in a previous life, so all of the foregoing comes naturally to me.

I just use a Google Doc and do the same as @Heimkehr every time anything is touched. I also have occasional UOAs. But I've never had a warranty claim that required it and my dealer knows very well how I maintain my Jeeps. Keep receipts if nervous about it.

When your other 14 year old Jeep is at 170,000 miles and runs/looks like new, they'd be hard pressed to argue I am neglectful.

I keep all the receipts and note the date and mileage of the actual change. In all my years of driving and owning new cars, I've never had an engine warranty claim. But I still keep all the receipts, just in case. You never know when you might have to provide them.

I was planning on doing all of my own oil changes. However, the dealer I purchased my vehicle from offers a lifetime powertrain warranty. They said all my oil changes must be done by an ASE certified mechanic otherwise my lifetime powertrain warranty will be void. I am debating on whether it will be worth it just to do my own oil changes. Maybe I can go get ASE certified.

If that is the case. Read the warranty carefully as you will not be able to mod your Jeep or replace a simple maintenance item without voiding your "lifetime" warranty. Best of luck.
I'd rather replace a $20 cabin filter myself than pay $150 for an ASE certified tech. LOL

What?? I'd read through the details of your warranty. That can't possibly be correct, unless it's not the usual Mopar warranty that everyone else buys.

Also, I'm pretty sure your dealership likely isn't paying a certified mechanic to change your oil, and instead has Jimbob do that between car washes and sweeping the lot, while the tech initializes that it was done.

I agree. Really doesn’t matter to me anyway. I have a eight year, 125,000 mile, $0 deductible warranty.

Receipts fade, warranty denied…

I just write dates/mileage on receipts and scan it, then add to excel.

What?? I'd read through the details of your warranty. That can't possibly be correct, unless it's not the usual Mopar warranty that everyone else buys.

I think this may vary from dealer to dealer, as every dealership does not offer a lifetime powertrain warranty.

Have them do an oil change every 10k miles like the book requires. then do an oil change in between yourself

I added the VIN to the top of the "maintenance sheet", plus space for who, what, when, where, why, etc. Then made 50 copies.

AND I cut out the Proof of Purchase (barcodes) off each bottle and filter box, parts label, etc. and tape them to the maintenance sheet.

This is not true!!! A car maker cannot force you to use a dealership or any other entity to keep your warranty valid. Just make sure that you keep your receipts of the supplies for your oil change, and have them organized just in case. It is illegal for them to require something like this.
