What I’m talking about is this - the top, dark fairlead - $208! Instead, how about these in red. $34 and change - unless you order just one post, then it’s cheaper. Thoughts?

Isnt that a yankum rope fairlead? I really like the all rope concept, rope shackles, etc. No anywhere in the line. I have one, just not currently mounted, because I'm using the factor 55 (ha) to stow the rope.

Yes sir; I download the Yankum example. All brands of this design are expensive, but the same thing can be achieved for literally a fraction of the cost. I will take a photo of mine and post here in a few minutes, for perspective.

Here’s my install. I had to grind down the post the rope is attached to, due to the smaller radius of the metal-reinforced loop.

I'm a roller fairlead guy myself.

John, I’m a little confused. Video guy says he’s NEVER had the rope come off a roller and get pinched, yet in his demo - to prove that a roller fairlead is better - that’s exactly what happened.

Huh?

Well, he deliberately parked on a terrible angle. He mentioned, nobody would ever use such an awkward angle to winch as he did. With that angle all of the stress on the roller breaking had nothing to do with it being synthetic rope. Cable would have done the same thing.

Edit: he was actually demonstrating, even on a terrible angle the rope wouldn't get pinched. On this stress test it just so happened the roller broke. Again cable would have done the same thing and nobody would deliberately use that angle to winch.

@Wabujitsu

They do some strenuous testing and make some really good points. I appreciate that they're are a few different options, we're not limited to just one.

That first video that shows the roller breaking does a good job of showing why you don't use a roller with synthetic rope. And as far as that being because of an "extreme" angle they are winching against, are you kidding me? That isn't an extreme angle at all. That is a pretty normal angle for many recovery operations.

This is nowhere near what I would consider an extreme angle for winching, but you get the idea. It is very rare to be able to winch from straight on.

And also, the hawse fairlead he is comparing it to is a crappy example of a hawse fairlead. The angle on that fairlead is a lot sharper than most hawse fairleads. The angle on the fairlead that came stock on any of my Warn winches with synthetic rope isn't near that sharp. So, yah, that video does a good job of proving he is wrong to use a roller fairlead with synthetic rope.

Well, be that as it may, the synthetic rope had nothing to do with the roller breaking. On that angle, cable would have broke that old rusty, roller fairlead just the same.

I certainly am not saying to anyone, ditch your hawse and run out to buy a roller fairlead but they are an option with synthetic rope. Besides the videos I've been using this set up for 8 years, no issues.

Use what you like dude. 👍
