I have the 3.6L with 8800 miles.
today I drove my normal routine and just before getting there the Coolant temp soared to 258*. All other temps were in range. shut It down right away and popped the hood the coolant level was normal did not see anything out of the ordinary. Left the hood up for 20-30 minutes and started it up and drove off. Temps did get up to 227 which is higher than I normally notice, on about a 10 miles drive. Got some diner and about an hour later went down the highway 75ish, temps stay at 195-198 for the entire way. Got off the highway another 5 miles home (expecting it to overheat), got no higher that 205.

so it seems all is good, but now I don’t trust it. Mostly because my wife is handicapped and I have a young daughter; being stranded with them would be hell especially around where we have to drive through.

what would you all do in this situation? I could take it in to the dealer, but if they cannot reproduce I just wasted a day or two. They never have a loaner, and need a vehicle for my wife’s doctors appointments….
i had a brake issue awhile back and the dealer said they had me on a list for a loaner, I called every day for two weeks, then gave up. Called them today about the loaner and still nothing. Very disappointing to say the least.

anyhow thought?

It sounds like your thermostat stuck closed, or you had an air bubble in your engine cooling system, just bleed out. When your engine is cold, make sure that your coolant level is full. I would drive it and see if it happens again. Also check to see if you have any codes.

Got a JScan so I am planning a look for codes in the morning.
bleeding, it that just opening the coolant reservoir to see if there are bubbles?
stuck thermostat would that throw a code?

You may have a bad engine coolant temperature sensor. If it was truly 258 deg, coolant would bubbling and steaming.

Could be, I could tell it was hotter under the hood than normal. But no idea what it was.

As a long-time Jeep owner and first responder, I hate to say this...but...if you need a reliable vehicle for your family, a Wrangler may not be the best choice, especially if it is needed for critical medical care. While we all love our Jeeps, I'd gladly dump mine to ensure the health and safety of a family member. I really hope you get this situation sorted out and wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted and please stay safe.

So I checked for codes and did not find any. Motor was cool, started it up and let it run. Once it got up to about 190* the upper radiator hose got warm, let it idle another 10 minutes and engine temp never got over 200. The ambient temp is 74* here.

is there a way to force the fan into high?

The tazer can do it, I believe.

If you have jscan you can go into “trail view” then at the bottom it has something like “tap for more” when you do a bunch of green icons should pop up and one is the fan…tap it…it will take a few seconds but should turn orange and then the fan will turn on.

The Tazer JL has a function to turn on the radiator fan at 100% on demand.

I never had an overheat like you reported, but once I did all the mods on my Jeep this last six months or so, I noticed significantly higher coolant and oil temps. I got tired of using the Tazer on an as needed basis when coolant temps got to 220+, so I put an RPM Extreme fan controller module on my Jeep yesterday. I've driven the Jeep about 50 miles since install yesterday and I never see coolant temps above 200 for more than a few seconds. It is a game changer. The temps here are going to hit 103+ tomorrow. I'm planning on putting the Jeep thru the ringer tomorrow to see how the temps react to hot weather with the fan controller.

The fan is working with the JScan - thanx for that tip

I'm going to second a failed temp sensor here. If you were at 258 your heads would be toast. The coolant would be boiling up like a SOB as well. It would be blatantly obvious.

Just keep an eye on it. If it happens again take it in, and be sure to monitor the coolant level just incase.

it’s gonna work just fine. I actually just disabled my RPM fan controller (for science), we’ll be at 106° on Thursday.

If your Jeep truly hit 258 it would go into limp mode. And you would recognize that if it happened.

Not sure if it went to limp mode I was in a parking lot and not going fast at all; it said something on the screen in bright red and I saw 258*. And that moment I parked and shut it down.

I drove around quite a bit today and it was much warmer outside than yesterday and it never got over 212*

just a fluke in hiding now waiting to nuke me
