They asked for 1k, and I agreed to 500, non-refund. Sure refundable is better, but the total deal was more important in my case. I'd push for non-refundable, but if it is the best deal you have it may not be worth it. Personally I can't see how it could go totally sideways.

I would never agree to a non refundable deposit without getting a true invoice signed agreeing on the price. Having it non refundable puts the ball in the dealership's court. They have control. That's exactly what you don't want when you are buying a vehicle.
Totally agree. Also, I would wait to talk/negotiate deposit until all the pricing negotiation is done. It's ideal to get no or refundable deposit. I couldn't, but was happy with trade price/mileage, and JLUR pricing.

I'd agree here that the minimum is a signed POC with detailed pricing. I got a complete POC and second page with letterhead and everything completely itemized out. JLUR final price on both sheets too.

To are you wheelers and dealers, here’s a fact check:
As long as you’re going to buy the vehicle and you know you’re going to buy the vehicle then it really doesn’t matter as long as you have a signed detailed breakdown on what your negotiated price is going to be.
At the end you can just take it off any taxes that are on the vehicle so it really doesn’t matter you’re paying for it one way or another, who’s paying $500 last now.
Good deal and the down payment are always based on your negotiated price and what you agreed on if that doesn’t happen then you 500 is refundable no matter what they say.
Lastly, if you’re still getting 6% back of invoice you can’t complain about anything, that’s huge on a brand new 2018 JL.

Shit can happen. You could lose your job. JLUs could start spontaneously exploding. It could take 6 months to deliver your order.

I agree it is a trade-off to some of the great prices people are getting on factory orders but non-refundable deposits come with risks.

I agree with everybody, however, if something catastrophic happened I’m sure the dealership would understand and without hesitation would give you that money back because of the effect social media house today.

For the record, I have never put any money down on a vehicle that I ordered and I’ve ordered a few of them. However on the Rubicon that I ordered on February 9
They were asking for $1000 down and I gave them 500 I thought that was fair because I met them halfway and I was getting the vehicle for 6% under invoice not including my tread lightly. This was all done over the phone and text and I have it in writing signed by manager. I’m in California and nobody will touch that kind of a deal, matter fact they’re selling for 1000 over MSRP here in California. The vehicle was purchased from Jim Marsh Chrysler/Jeep in Nevada. This was posted to let everyone know that they are still doing this kind of a deals.
I also clarified this with FCA/Jeep when checking the production stage of the Rubicon with my last name and Vin #.

Like I said, I get it for an exceptional deal. I just think we should acknowledge there is risk. There are some horror stories on this forum where dealers refused to let people out of their deal.

You are correct.....However, no risk, no gain! And just because there are a few bad apples doesn’t mean all apples are bad.... anyway today we had a weapon, it’s called social media much better then in the old days.

I think there is one good thing coming out of all of this, if the individual that is doing the deal is happy, let them be happy.

In life today we give up money a lot of times before you get something. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.

My favorite part of the forum is hearing what everyone is able to get. Honestly it has been good ammo and knowledge of what is out there. Everyone's situation and "deal" should be something they are happy with and without all the information here I would not have ended up where I did.

...but still a few weeks out, lol :)

If you know you want to vehicle and there’s no reason to worry about a refund, unless you’re thinking of getting coffee down the road, LOL. I guess I Donely worry about a refund if there was something wrong with the vehicle and I’d have them put that in writing if it’s on their part not your part.

If it’s a small amount I wouldn’t worry about it, however, maybe you can get a letter from your credit union or bank showing that you have financing available so that way you don’t put any money down.

From what I was told long ago it is illegal for them to "not refund" your money, and they could sell it from under you. Happened with the Hellcat.
It's usually is State specific.

Hello: New member. When you guys made your JLU order deposit did the dealer give you a receipt that stated Refundable Deposit. Is the deposit amount set by FCA or the dealer.
The deposit amount is determined by the dealer. It usually is negotiable. I have ordered a few cars and I have never paid more then a $100-$200 deposit.

Haven't read the whole thread but here's my thoughts: It depends on the deal and how serious you are. My dealer wants 1K non refundable. I'm good with that, because I'd rather make that gamble on 6% under invoice than put down a refundable deposit on Invoice, or even MSRP. If they sell it out from under me, there will be consequences, but I doubt that will happen. I have a buddy that ordered form the same dealer and everything went very smooth. Also, I'm very happy to be buying in state with my deal because of lemon laws.

However, because the deposit is non-refundable, I'm holding off just a bit more. I would say I was 90% ready last week when I made the deal, but I want to be 99% ready to put down 2K non refundable (ordering a Pacifica for the wife as well) :)
