They aren’t going to keep $500 cash around, they’ll deposit it so they can account for it and you’d receive a check back.... pretty standard process in any larger business.
Thanks, thats a relief.

Refundable. If they say otherwise, don't deal with that dealership.
I think that is a broad generalization. The dealer has the right to consider whether they want to make a $40,000+ investment in a vehicle they wouldn't have ordered themselves and that perhaps doesn't meet the demographics of their market.

So if you want a manual sahara, or a soft-top Rubicon in the North, or a Mojito Sahara, or any number of combinations that they don't want to be stuck with they absolutely have the right to ask for a non-refundable deposit. Doesn't mean you have to buy it from them but doesn't make them unreasonable.

That should be a consideration if you have a trade-in or financing or something that can't be closed until the Jeep arrives. In that case you may want to check out the dealer's reputation closely or look for a dealership that will give you a refundable deposit.

But it is not that cut and dry.

You made some good points.

For this vehicle, and the demand that it is and will cause, a non-refundable deposit is ludicrous.

Regardless of the flavor of JL, it'll sell right now.

I would never agree to a non refundable deposit without getting a true invoice signed agreeing on the price. Having it non refundable puts the ball in the dealership's court. They have control. That's exactly what you don't want when you are buying a vehicle.

Your point completely makes sense when it comes to much harder to sell vehicles. You can't make a build on a JL that won't sell right now.

Same here - no deposit required. They are the largest Jeep dealer in the country, yet they too are on a strict allotment basis. If they were to receive a custom order JL - especially U and/or R - they could sell it the same day off the lot if the person who ordered it decided to back out.

PS More pertinent to the order tracking thread: we have a VON, but the dealer laughed about tracking, and from the look of comments here, it seems to be a futile effort. So I guess we'll just get a call in 6-8 weeks.

$500 refundable here, although I don't think they are even cashing my check unless I back out.

Chevy dealer I dealt with last time in the same auto-group did the same thing. I tend not to worry about them trying to gouge me after the order arrives since I have family that gets me guaranteed employee pricing (3% under invoice) on my Jeep.

While my dealer required no deposit, you do have to think about some dealers, especially really high volume ones that may be placing a fair amount of custom orders, in that case I can see taking a non refundable, while I don't see them having much of a hard time moving metal...the potential to be stuck with several customers custom orders is less then ideal so i think its fair to have some skin in the game.

Can a dealer refuse to sell a 2018 JLU Rubi at the FCA Affiliates Program price?
All FCA dealerships should honor Affiliate pricing programs, except for vehicles that are excluded. At this point there's been no update that JL's are excluded. From the many posts here of people buying new JL's it's been clear that most dealers have no problem with the Affiliates programs (of which Tread Lightly is just one). If you encounter a dealer that tells you that the new JL is not eligible for Affiliates discounts I'd suggest you thank them for their time, look for another dealer, and contact FCA to report a complaint about that dealer.
