One Touch Sky Top and Car Washes

I want to know if anyone has issues with going through car washes with their One Touch Sky Top?

I had a service writer tell me the owners' manual says to not take them through a car wash. Here's what it actually says:

I'm thinking that's for soft tops, not ours. I'm not worried about getting my windows scratched or getting a wax build-up.

There's also this, which I'm thinking is generic advice and not directed specifically to Wranglers with tops containing fabric:

OK- I don’t know why an SOT’s plastic cross bar broke. But the only possibility I can think of is the jet force dryer at the no touch wash. There is no alternative unless it broke for no reason. They are small and fragile so don’t even think about a brushed wash. … fortunately Max Care covered minus $100 deductible. … $1,730 repair for

I don’t put my SOT through the car wash.

That said, the manual citation seems to be for avoidance of scratching the soft vinyl side/rear “lights” (i.e., modern isinglass) behind you on a soft top. My SOT rear windows are hard. I still don’t do it.

Related: it’d be really, really nice if *somebody* would program a touchless tunnel to have a “power jet to maybe 24 inches high, yet rain-only from above” setting. I’d pay for that regularly. It’d have to be low enough not to flood a convertible Mini. But still high enough to spray a Jeep tire. Good use-case for AI.

I also avoid carwashes with mine. I took it through a touchless carwash once and like @2nd 392 said, the air blowers were very hard on the top. Sometimes it can be an extreme pain in the butt, especially living in PA during the winter, but I would only hand wash it.

IDK, I have a monthly plan at Mister and have taken wife’s Jeep with the SOT through the car wash weekly with no problems for over five years, this is a brush type car wash. Jeep still looks great. I have also taken my Jeep with a premium softtop through the same car wash weekly without any problems.

I haven’t had my JLUR w/SOT through a wash yet. But I’ve taken my 2dr soft top through the brushed style and have no issues with the windows on that aspect. But I do manage to scratch them removing them and laying them on top of each other in the back of my jeep on a nice day. They also have been in the woods and gotten brushed by branches so they have pinstripes through them and my kids don’t seem to understand to keep their hands off the soft windows when there is mud and dirt on them so I have little finger scratches on them too.

The SOT is a two-row sliding fabric sunroof. The tops of Jeeps so equipped are essentially no more robust than that of a proper soft top Jeep. If the latter are proscribed from car washes, SOT owners would be well served to at least consider that guidance for their vehicles.

Take mine multiple times a week for the past 5 years with zero issues( construction worker and it goes to sites everyday). Knock on wood!

I have too much other stuff sticking off the Jeep to trust going through an automatic car wash, but the SOT gets the same power sprayer and brush treatment that the rest of the Jeep gets. No issues yet.

Not all car washes are made or work the same. I have been using Tommy’s Express Car Wash on my SOT since 2021. I won’t take it through any other car wash. By the way, they are a national chain.

That are Very Labor Intense should one of the PLASTIC cross bars break. The top had to be removed and partially disassembled to get the new 2 bar section installed properly, one on the track and the pull straps on both . …. Auto wash Risk Reward ?

That is definitely food for thought, regarding risk/reward, brother. I have to say though, I have yet to see anyone’s SOT damaged from using a car wash. Mike, are you above the snow line in CA? I wonder if the weight of “wet” snow could cause a failure in a SOT. Any idea what broke that plastic piece?

No, central Ca. The top was never hit from the bottom or top. It got a brushed wash only it’s first wash because they had previously offered hand washes upon request. I got it washed anyway since I was there after the owner said they have horsehair brushes not plastic …. Did it just self destruct for no reason ? I use a wash in the town where I worked that hand wash then through the touch less tunnel and typically do a good job, but they have one helluva powerful blow dryer. My only suspect. They will hand wash without the tunnel but change extra due to more extensive drying needed. Ohh well, it’s connected to a Mexican restaurant. I wait on the patio….. ………….……….……wash tunnel
