This weekend I installed this dash cam Ombar Amazon. I loosened the black panels on the roll bars to hide the wiring to the rear camera. The rear camera is not in an ideal place but will see a vehicle if it hits me from behind or is too close. I didn't want to run it attached to the hard top to attach it to the rear window because then I would need to disconnect it every time I remove the hard top. For now I am using the cigarette lighter and I hid the wires under the dash with small zip ties. I might hard wire it to the fuse panel in the future as it has a 24 hour surveillance feature. The only issue I had was finding the correct micro SD card as I first ordered a U1 and it needs a U3 speed. I then ordered a SanDisk U3 256GB from Amazon and it could not format the card for some reason. 3rd time was a charm as I found a 128GB PNY at Office Depot that worked perfectly.

I decided to install a dash cam because I am driving a bit more for work and drivers in FL suck, to be blunt.

It would be nice if someone could invent a device that captures and records using the factory front and rear cameras.

The trail cam is explicitly designed to see what's on a trail directly in front of the Jeep. It's not even great at that.

The cost of designing and producing a device like you're describing would most likely cost more than what companies like @WOLFBOX CAR LIFE charge for their complete systems.

All it would require is a small hard drive to store short-term footage and then something to sync to a phone app for long-term cloud storage (not much more than the electronics that you would find in a ring doorbell). I have the front facing camera and even though it doesn't have the FOV of other vehicle cameras, IMO it is sufficient to document which lane each vehicle was in during an accident. The stock cameras as less likely to be stolen and remain in position when the top is removed.

Hi, do you have a write up somewhere showing how to install this? Thanks
Hello Dan, we do have an article on installing this. It also helps you choose right hardwire kit.

I also found two videos on YouTube for you. Hope they help.
