Oil level problem

2018 jlus, about a month after I got my jeep I checked the oil and it registered 3/4” above the fullmark on the dipstick. I had the oil changed at the dealer day before yesterday (2000 miles), after running errands yesterday and letting the jeep sit for an hour, I checked the oil level and it was 3/4” above the full mark again. I took the jeep into the dealer and they verified with the tech that he had only put in 5 qts of mobil1, they showed me the jug and I believe them that thats what was put in. The dealer doesn’t know why the oil is registering that high and doesn’t have a clue. Has anyone experienced this condition before. I am beginning to think that maybe the dipstick is to long (defect) which would cause the overfill reading. If anyone happens to have measured the one in their engine (don’t know why they would but I’m grasping at straws here) I would like to know how long it is. I am at a loss as to what could be the reason for the high reading.
Would appreciate not recieving comments, lectures, etc on changing my own oil as some people on the forum tend to do. If you can offer insights, thanks.

They may not have drained it completely. It happens, especially when they are trying to be quick. You also have to check the oil when the engine is fully warm, 5 minutes after it is shut off. Trust me, that does make a difference. I also wonder if they changed the filter. That could also cause the overfill. (It is an easy mistake to make if you have two techs doing the job. They each might think the other swapped the filter.) If they don't loosen the fill cap when draining, that can also cause some oil not to drain out.

If you want to know for sure, do it yourself. Drain the oil and remove the filter. Also, loosen the oil fill cap. Let it drain until it isn't even dripping, which should be 10 minutes or probably less. If it is still dripping, just let it drain until the drips are infrequent or they stop. Then, replace the drain plug, install the new filter, and then add a new 5 quart jug of your favorite and appropriate 5w30 oil. Drive it around until the oil temp is around 180 degrees or higher, put it on level ground (this is critical), shut the engine off, and set your phone timer for five minutes. Then check your oil. I'll bet it will be just right.

When in the first 1k miles, I checked my 3.6 oil while cold once and it showed almost a half quart low. I added 1/2 quart. Then, later, I checked it when hot, 5 minutes after shut down, as the manual states, and it was high. Lesson learned. Any deviation from the proper procedure can give you a reading that is in error.

...Of course, I'm assuming the procedure for checking the 2.0 is the same as the 3.6. Check your owner's manual to be sure and check it exactly the way it says.

Check on level ground, most parking lot surface is actually not leveled.

I understand if you Don’t, won’t, or can’t do oil changes. Do your self a favor and mark your oil filter with something visible like a small dot of white paint. Some oil change places are known not to change filters for money savings/ over sight. It may save your engine. Once an oil filter gets full I will bypass internally

Here is the deal, the 3.6JL takes 5 qts of 0-20w synthetic period, dealer service folks have been over filling for months

The level of oil in the JL should be where the yellow arrow is and if it’s in the blue it’s overfilled period......

Did my own change.

Let it drain for about 10 minutes.

After adding 5 qts of Mobil 1 and driving around for a week I checked my level, its slightly above max.

I wonder if the dipstick isnt calibrated right.

Issue resolved! Many thanks to DanW for the instructions on how to check the oil correctly. The owners manual has specific instruction on the correct procedure for checking the oil (I somehow failed to notice this in the manual).
I have checked the oil in engines the same way for many years: shut off the engine, let it sit for about 30 minutes to let the oil drainback to thepan and then check the level. Don’t know why jeep came up with the 5 minute time limit for checking the oil, must be specific to the jl engines.

So I understand the oil should get to the last "A" or so. But what if it's more in the middle between the end notches? Is that risk of engine damage? Other dipsticks have a "min" and "max". Sorry - I haven't been a car guy - until now, my Wrangler was just delivered a few days ago. Thank you.

Don't overthink it. These engines can operate as designed from a quart low to a quart high. if you are close to the full mark, you are good. A little under or over hurts nothing.

The proper procedure for Jeep products is to stop the engine when it is hot and wait 5 minutes, then check it. Of course, you want to be on level ground.

I wonder what the reasoning was for Jeep to go away from the traditional flat bar with the cross hatched "Add" and "Full" markings to the spiral wire type with the round dowel end oil dipstick?

I have a JL and recently got a JT, here is what I have just found. I checked the JT's oil it had been sitting for 2 days without being ran. It was WAY over filled I was like crap, then I thought about it reading this tread and it dawned on me, the oil cooler and filter drained back to the oil pan! Once we started up the JT took it for a spin and checked the oil level after that, it was back in the normal range, no longer over filled. I've seen that the baxter oil filter adapter site says that all of the oil drains from the top end of the engine after 30 mins. That being said I think this is why I was seeing such a high level of oil. Also wanted to note this JT is brand new only has 1K miles on it so that is the way it came from the factory about an inch above the zinc measuring portion on the dipstick. Hope this helps.

The correct was to check your engines oil level: Start up you engine and drive it till you have reached normal temperature. Then park it on level ground. turn off the engine a wait 5 minutes. Then check the engine oil level.
