Just got analysis back from Blackstone and was surprised to find Aluminum and Copper wear indicators were high against universal averages at 10ppm and 5ppm respectively. Too little info yet to know if there are any issues, but what numbers are anyone else who uses Blackstone getting?

Curious, what is your current mileage? What was the interval mileage for that oil change? What oil and filter are you using? Just received the Black stone kit and will be testing my results on my next change.

23k, with 6100 on that change... That one was third and final Jeep wave, so from now on out it's factory filter and Pennzoil or whatever else quality in-spec oil is available

If you are pretty serious about UOAs, you should look into Polaris/Horizon instead.

They are ISO certified and use all of the most current ASTM testing processes.

They also include TBN or TAN at no extra cost.

Does anyone have experience with the oil analysis actually making a significant difference in engine life or finding something early that saved the engine? Or is it just one more thing to be anxious about.

Im asking seriously cause I've never had it done. I just change the oil often. My old tj has 168k miles, never had the oil analyzed and when they replaced a head gasket they said everything looked great. My jl has 52k miles, no engine issues....yet.

What is the main purpose of doing this and it's it truly making a difference? What would the analysis change for you? Thanks for the info, as im obviously ignorant to the practice.

I believe some people just want to know, and others use the info to possibly extend drain intervals, which saves you money. My two cents.

i think this is done mostly out of curiosity. if you have a few ppm copper or aluminum or cat dander in your oil, it’s not going to blow up. change the oil when the jeep says to change it.
put the oil in that jeep says to put in it.
something else will kill your jeep before the cat dander does.

Yep...I detected a potassium leak (coolant) long before it could be detected in other ways AND before it started ruining the oil and consequently the engine. Without UOA trending this would not be possible.

UOAs are for monitoring the health of the oil and to a lesser degree the health of the engine.

For those of us who change our own oil, having a history of documented analyses also serve as proof of oil changes. Should any issues arise with an engine that is still under warranty, this provides a little more insurance to ensure it gets repaired under warranty and may even help identify the cause. I've been told that keeping one's receipts for new oil and filters is important, but I don't trust how Stellantis may approach this situation in the future. As such, I'm more than happy to have as much proof as possible, all while being able to track the health of my engine at the same time.

Is Blackstone not ISO certified?

No; unless something has changed very recently. They also do not use many of the latest ASTM testing methodologies, they do not use gas chromatography for fuel dilution testing--their test is subjective at best since it observes a flash at a particular time in the test sequence. Last, but not least, they are more expensive that labs like Polaris/Horizon who are fully ISO certified and do use the latest ASTM methods.

OK thanks for the info. I tried looking around for Polaris/Horizon, but all I got was a simple login page with no info about the company, description of their services, or a way to sign up for anything. Do you have a link to share?
