Or rather, lack of....
Agreed, it looks minuscule but still appears to have a front diff? But know that you have me thinking about it I guess even a 4 x 2 would need a front differential on a solid axle to allow for independent wheel spin, correct? Or am I missing something else?

I don't know the exact mechanics of the front of a 4x2 Wrangler, but there shouldn't be anything connecting the front wheels to each other. Its probably just a metal tube in place of an axle with no drive line components so it can use the same suspension as the other wranglers.

4x2s do have a beam connecting the front two wheels. It's much easier to put a dummy axle in place of the true axle so that all of the hardware lines up, then re engineer the entire front of the vehicle. I know my 2003 FWD sentra had a beam "axle" in the rear connecting both wheels. A beam axle is just that, a beam, and both wheels are bolted to the ends but they are not connected to each other as far as movement. Here is a link to a 4x2 XJ front beam, I'm sure the wranglers have something similar:

I checked out an old pic of my JKU passenger side, no trail rated badge, and I don't think I removed them, so I believe that.

Nope, the wheel just spins on the wheel bearing, no need to connect the two wheels. This axle is called a beam axle. You see a similar set up on most semi trucks.

First thing I'm planning on doing is installing a rear diff lock. Would solve this problem quick.

It does look like there is a front diff. Which begs the question why did he not shift it into 4wd.....:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:
