about to pull the trigger on a new wheel setup and got nervous.... I have OEM rims (7.5 / 44mm) with upgraded 315/70/17 tires on my '24 JLU now. looking to go with a 9' -6mm rim by mammoth. from what I can tell the overall change will be 2" further out... but can't tell if there is anything I am missing since I am not moving from stock wheel/tire to new wheel/new tire?

It isn't that much poke. A lot of people run black rhinos with -18 offset, and a lot run methods at 0 and a few at -12 offsets. -6 is slightly less than a quarter inch further out than 0.

I think -18 is to much, but a -6 I doubt I'd even notice a difference over my current offset of 0.

Wide or narrow axles ? 1.5” = 3/4” or 19mm per side. If narrow -6 = +13 for wide. 12.50’s tread is even (wide) with XR extensions with my -1mm.

I have -18 , its too much without 3 inch lift and fender extensions. . But i can run 38s without scrubbing . And it also looks good. Stock height and sport fenders would look silly like you got a deal on the wheels or youre a little weird.

Try this website. This helps visualize what things will look like when you go from one offset to another and include changing the wheel width, etc.

I'm running -38mm offset and I love it. I also built this to rock crawl so I like having a lot of meat out there. I also run KBD fenders fenders so I have a lot of tire exposed but that means a lot of sling up onto the body. Sorry I don't have a better pic to show what it looks like.

Just keep in mind, whether you use wheel spacers or different offset wheels, the farther out you push the tires, the quicker you will have to replace wheel bearings.
