Been casually shopping for dash cams over the last couple of weeks, but I'm specifically looking for something that just plugs into the JL's USB port. Seems like every camera I've looked at is hard-wired, but I want one that I can easily unplug and stow away or just reinstall in another car. I drive year-round in safari mode, so don't necessarily need a rear-facing cam either. I've never had a camera in my vehicles, but I suspect there are some experts on the topic here. Appreciate any recommendations you all have and happy Jeepin'!

How much you willing to part with? Do you want dual cameras or just a forward facing one? Do you want the ability to film when parked? Do you want the ability to interface with the camera from your smart phone?

Cobra Road Scout, combination dash cam and radar detector in one small unite. They both work great. Comes with a 12v lighter plug for power.

I just use my GoPro. Works great, but isn’t really a dash cam per se.

Thanks for the great recommendations! Although I didn't want to invest in the Rove R3 as my first dash cam, I noticed that the R2 was also packed with great features for the price. When I discovered that Amazon was also offering a $30 coupon, I couldn't resist and pulled the trigger.

https://www.amazon.com/R2-4K-Dashboard-Camera-Recorder-Vision/dp/B074JT3698/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=5ATW95PCSCHG&keywords=rove+2r+4k&qid=1704074854&sprefix=rove+2r,aps,161&sr=8-1-spons&ufe=app_do:amzn1.fos.18ed3cb5-28d5-4975-8bc7-93deae8f9840&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

Just hope it lives up to the 33,971 ratings. Even if it doesn't, at least it was a small investment.

I use the Garmin Mini 2, the wire is completely hidden as it runs inside the roof groove, the a pillar, under the dash to the cigarette lighter.

I use the Rove 2 in both our JL and our RV and like it a lot. Super easy to use, good features, and good quality picture. I think you'll be happy with your decision. Enjoy.

Thanks for your feedback on the R2. Seems like a great camera for the price and glad you're enjoying yours!

Been following this thread as I'm also looking for a dash cam. The R2 looks good. Can the GPS feature be toggled off and on as needed?

i do the same but hook it up to a hidden usb port i put in the passenger footwell so no wires are visible. i wanted a small, easy to use camera without visible wires and this fit the bill pretty well. no complaints.

Just read through the reviews on Amazon for both the Rove and Garmin and there are just too many users complaining the devices are unreliable. Is the dash cam market simply too immature right now?

I don't think this is the case, at least for the Rove, Garmin, and several others on the market. The Rove R2 in particular has 33,999 ratings on Amazon, of which 67% are 5 stars and 16% are 4 stars. This is one reason why I chose the R2. Reading through the reviews, it seems like most issues were related to the memory cards that people were using. Seems like they disregarded R2's clear statements about using their proprietary cards, or simply didn't read the instructions. I know Rove's cards are overpriced, but if it makes the system more reliable, then they are still worth it IMO.
