Strommen95 I have had the same issue for the past week, did you ever get this checked out? Not sure where to start but it's loud.

Not to hijack your thread OP, but does anyone have any thoughts on this squealing noise? First time I’ve heard this, just took this video after starting the Jeep to warm up this morning. My first thought is the belt.

Edit: Noise gone after 5 minutes or so.

No, it was definitely rain related. Happened another time when it rained and then never again(even in rain.) Your serpentine belt might be loose.

Heads up fellas. This was my outcome of the engine noise lots of us have been dealing with...... had the cams replaced on the passenger side as the dealer had seen that in 3 other 3.6l (wrangler, gladiator, ram) drove it 2 km home and parked it. 5 min later decided too pull it in the garage too have a look at the work they did, started it up and tapping away still. Called the dealer too come pick it up 4 days later apparently the crank is out of it and a new engine has been ordered under warranty.

This is my current situation. I have 43k miles on a 2018 3.6

Slight gas applied to bring out the knocking more. Video outside and inside the Jeep.

let me know your experience with this…

Whatever the sound is, it doesn't sound good. If it were me, I would use a 3 foot section, of a cut off garden hose, and use it as a stethoscope. But, first check to see if it is low on oil. Or, if it is close to an oil change. Mine made sounds that were loud too, then I changed to a heavier weight oil. Now it's quiet as a mouse.

@DaltonGang
What oil weight did you previously use? What oil weight did you switch too?
Thanks.

From 0-20w synthetic to Pennzoil 5-30w synthetic. It made a world of difference.
I went from worrying about the lifter noise, and whether the engine was going to blow up, eventually, to loving how quiet it sounds. I seriously debated on trading it in, for another vehicle, before the switch.

did the oil change less than 1K miles ago. There was a slight glitter look to my oil… but I was essentially turned away from a dealership twice because there wasn’t a smoking gun. Just have a misfire in 5 and of course they didn’t hear a knock or just ignored the fact that I mentioned it. Have a dealer appointment with a different one on Tuesday to have them look at it. Will tell them to open it up regardless if they get the sign off from JEEP or not. Have 2 months left on my powertrain warranty so it’s now or never… hoping for a new engine at this point… if they would’ve done any due diligence or cared they probably could’ve saved my engine… but it’s been 3+ months now and I drive it daily.

Interesting. I thought the manual says to use 0-20. I might give the 5-30 a try.

It does but many think it was due to achieve better MPG in testing.

Is this switch something people due once out of warranty? Or is this a recommended oil weight in manual as well? I could go get the manual, but im sure someone knows the answer too. Just seeing if it would be an issue if they ever checked your oil in case of a failure.

For the PUG engine in the JL, 0w20 is the only weight recommended. It was redesigned around using that oil weight as well. It won't blow up moving to a slightly thicker weight, but it could be a warranty issue if the dealership gets picky and sends the oil off for analysis in case of an engine failure.

We personally use Mobil 1 Extended performance 0w20 and our 3.6 runs nice and quiet.

Only weight that you will be warrantied under is 0W-20 as it is the only weight reflected in the manual.

Thank you. I have been using the Pennzoil 0-20 Platinum. Not sure if the switch from Pennzoil to Mobil 1 in the same weight would make any difference. I also am not quite sure what this engine is suppose to sound like. Drove a 7.3 Diesel for 20 yrs. Then had a 4cyl turbo. So its a whole new sound for me.
