My best friend was a paramedic in NYC. He taught me to say "Sorry brother (or sister), I can't help you today".

It works pretty well because a) the "brother" part establishes some kinship and empathy with the requestor, and b) the "today" part implies you would like to help and any other day would be ok, just not able to today. I find 99.999% of the time they just give some kind response and walk away.

My wife tried this one time but got it all wrong and just said "can't help you". Almost started a fight! :lipssealed:

There's a guy at a gas station I work at occasionally on Wednesdays. He doesn't work at the gas station, he begs for money from people outside. We call him Justin Bieber on Ice, because he looks like Justin Bieber on Ice. ?

It's kind of sad, he's only 19 and he's a meth head, but at the same time too I'm not about to give him money so he can go get high!

Two weeks ago some super nice guy give him a $20 bill, you should have seen his eyes light up! He told the guy "God bless you!" And then left presumably to go get high! Though who knows maybe he was going to get sandwiches for him and his friends! ? ? ?

I have never been one to give money to pan handlers, though I have shared food with some people who were obviously in need. Awhile ago I had a conversation with a friend about the whole idea of "I don't give money to [insert type of person asking for money] people because they're just going to use it for drugs/alcohol..." mentality. I expressed that I was on the "I concur!" side of this fence.

His response to me was something along the lines of, "I'll give if I can because whether I choose to give says everything about my character. What they choose to do with it says everything about their character." That shit stuck with me...

And then!, most currency went digital, I stopped carrying cash, and the cost of everything in the world went up like 10,000%, and I don't have change/cash to spare anyway. ?

... in all seriousness though, I do try to keep my world view aligned with that "I can't control the actions of others, only my own" mentality and it's definitely helped make for some better sleep at night!

Some years ago, a former work colleague of mine had purchased a few fixed value food vouchers, redeemable at a centrally located greasy spoon, with the intent of handing them out to those folks who asked for money in our downtown work location. Said greasy spoon was in easy walking distance. More to the point, the panhandlers' presence tended to increase during the cold months, so a warm meal would've provided real value in a number of ways.

After one ungrateful jerk loudly cursed my co-worker for offering a food coupon and not the cash he was apparently expecting, the co-worker tossed the rest in the trash and vowed to never voluntarily hand over another penny. I can't fault his thinking here, even if other folks (who would've had the basic manners to appreciate the gesture) have lost an opportunity to have a free meal.

Such is the world we live in.

I've had a no soliciting sign on the door of my office for years. As far as I can tell, it has only increased the number of people who come inside to solicit. It's like it makes it a challenge to them or something. ?‍♂

We got a few of those around town. Some men, some women, a few with children. But do you know who the most successful pan handler is?

A dude that looks like castaway Tom Hanks, with a small dog. And his sign even says “donate to feed dog”. There’s a piece of me that think the dog might be in better hands with animal control, but hey - there it is, some kind of beagle collie mix thing wagging its tail like it’s the best day everyday. And every time I’m stopped near this guy, I see at least a couple of cars call him over. Every. Single. Time.

So, TDLR. If you ever end up broke under a bridge, befriend a stray or a mutt. You’ll make the most money.

I've got this sign by my front door. Fortunately I haven't needed one for the Jeep... yet.

Man, I kind of liked having @Opus around here, but he did something stupid and brought up the forbidden "P word". Maybe our overlords won't judge him too harshly!

I try not to be heartless, but it's next to impossible to tell who is actually in NEED vs in WANT of money in those situations with all the scam artists out there.

I'll always stop by the Salvation Army, military, public services collections at grocery store fronts on my way out

But the people that stand at stoplight/sign intersections...I'm dubious of most of them, because they are invading my space vs me entering theirs. I dunno, I don't trust people who walk up to my vehicle with a can full of money in one hand and "freebies" in another. It seems like I'm doing something dirty ?

when i see really old people or people missing limbs ill give them a few bucks. when i lived in the LA area we started seeing Gypsies sitting out there with their kids all day. i felt bad for the kids but theyre basically in training on how to be scammers and beggars. especially when theyre out there during school hours.

a couple of months ago when it was over 100 degrees this poor homeless guy at 711 was begging me to buy him a water. i bought him a gallon bottle when i went inside and he was so thankful.

i love seeing some young guy/woman standing at the offramp with a sign, begging for money, and then some illegal immigrant standing next to him hustling flowers for sale or selling some kind of food. that speaks volumes. not that im a fan of illegal immigration but i can appreciate someone trying to earn the money instead of begging for it.

i hate the guys that start washing your window before you can tell them to GTFOH! ill give a buck, just dont make my windshield dirtier. one guy started washing my vans windshield once and pretty much ignored me when i told him not to. i didnt give him any money and chewed him out. he yelled back but thankfully didnt get violent. i called the cops and told them this fool was walking in traffic and being an aggressive panhandler.

maybe in the sprit of Christmas this year, @JAY could grant amnesty to all our fallen brethren who have exercised poor judgement and give them a second chance
