I am getting re-geared and I understand the recommended break-in period of 20 miles and cooling for the first 100 miles. I need to drive to work and it's 60 miles away. I can drive secondary roads at 55-25 MPH for 2/3rds of that, then 60-65MPH. Is this really a bad idea, or fine if I go easy on the throttle. It will be 60 miles and then 10 per day for three days and 60 miles home.

I really don't want to mess it up but what do the factory axles have for break-in? Hey, you got a new Jeep with 17 miles on it, gas on it and have fun.

I have 35x9.5 tires and am going to 4.88 gears on a Sport with D44 rear and a Tazer JL mini for the re-calibration. 3.6 on a manual with a Centerforce clutch.

I cannot confirm but if I remember correctly, I thought I read for the first (however many miles?) It was recommended to keep it under 55 mph. I would probably confirm with shop or gear manufacturer.

Dude, thats a monster crab, lucky!

Take it for a 20 mile lowish speed "fun drive" immediately after picking it up. Then bring a book or something and take a one hour cool-down break in the middle of your sixty mile drive.

Two cents.

If it's really cold in Alaska, perhaps you could cut down the cooling off periods. You'll have to see when the diff covers feel cool.

If you haven’t installed them send them for isotropic finish. No break in heat cycles needed, just change the break in gear oil at 500mi and your good to go. They also run cooler and another forgotten benefit or two. It cost $125 per 2 years ago. Will at East Coast Gear Supply (919-672-2705 ext 1101) sent them to Gear FX for finishing and they sent them to me…….
Will was recommended by a member and I do too, if you haven’t bought the gears.

Thanks all for the answers. The shop is ordering my gears, Yukon Gears Master pack, ans installing them. I have the knowledge to do so but they have a ton of experience with Yukon and I trust them.

I will do my best to follow the recommended break-in for the first week.

Crabs... Red Kings are my favorite and I really have a blast catching them. I can only eat so much and have as much fun sharing with the people close to me. Thanks for the nice comments about the bugs.

And there we were... On the deck of the boat in 6' seas. It was 4 degrees and we had to hand pull the pot from 280 -300 ft. The deck froze as Spencer and I pulled the pot and watched it come up on the depth screen.
The line and water froze on the deck as soon as we pulled it up. We were happy as we knew dinner and beers were soon coming.

No shit. This is true and we were only a few hundred yards off shore.

Pictures not from the same day.

That looks fantastic! A great way of life to enjoy the outdoors.

I sure wish I could do something like that even one time, but unfortunately at my age those days are over. If I survived the 6' seas, I'll never survive the 4 degree weather. My old bones would freeze in a matter of seconds. I got cold feet yesterday, today I'm sick as hell.

Im glad to see you're out there enjoying nature my friend. Enjoy that crab, the closest I'll get to that is Captain George's restaurant.

Curious. why do replacement gears need a break in process and new vehicles with new gears don't.

Even better when they rebuilt my rear diff under warranty no mention was made about a break in procedure. They had me sign the paperwork and sent me on my way.

Because it was under warranty everything was done with Dana parts.

it's not that new vehicles don't benefit from a break-in, Vehicle Mfrs just don't tell you loudly that they do.
some Owners Manuals still mention that vehicles should be driven gently at first, but most typical users don't care/don't want to hear about such things, and can't be bothered with RTFM'ing.

@AKLespaul
i would absolutely make a point of making sure i put the proper initial heat cycles on those gears for the sake of ensuring longevity; gear failures can result in a tow job, and in your area, that can be Double UnGood.
you might not end up with a full failure of gears, but you're much more likely to end up with quiet-running gears if you give them the proper initial heat cycles.

suggest maybe allowing a couple of extra hours to allow for cool-down after short warm-ups on that first drive to work if you don't have a chance to do the cycles when you first pick it up to drive it home.
recommendations i've seen on exactly how vary a little, but typically suggest something like a few heat cycles of 15-25 minutes at speed under 50 followed by an hour or more for cool down, followed by a few cycles at higher speeds with a similar period for cool down. the closer they get to stone-cold between heat cycles, the better, and we're not supposed to get them overly hot or hot for too long initially.
i hate wondering about these sorts of things when i'm in the Way Out There, so made a project of getting the cycles on mine when i re-geared.

good luck!
