Jeep may have a more budget friendly Wrangler in the works. “The automaker may cut pounds and dollars off the current Wrangler to give us the 4x4 we’ve been waiting for” Pic is of the 2016 “Shortcut”concept -

I’m in!

$20,000? I saw a bunch of side-by-side UTVs at the recent Sportsman’s show for almost $30,000… That’s nuts. Jeep would sell a LOT of these and, if they can make the 2.0 work they’d get close to 30mpg.

You have caused my 1997 Flame Red TJ to question its existence…. I think you might be referring to the changeover of the YJ to TJ when production delays caused the lack of a 1996.

*They did continuing building the YJ partially into 1996 but marketed them as 1995s. Then when the TJ was ready for production in spring of 1996, they marketed them as 1997 (early release). My 1997 rolled off the line with a Frankenstein mix of electronics. Some sensors are 1995 and some are 1997. Many are not interchangeable and you don’t know until you pull one and head to the parts counter. Luckily, in almost 30 years of ownership the inline 6 and 3 speed auto has proved rock solid..
You’re right. Insomnia interfered with my thinking there. Good catch. :like:

I have found a couple YouTube channels where they take the old MBs and CJ3s other vintage Jeeps down trails and they do very well overall. Even without lockers a lot of times they go places that most modern Jeeps, even rubicons wouldn't dream of. Primarily because of their small size they can just fit anywhere you point them. Think side by side but slower pace.
Low, small tires, Open diffs and all, it’s surprising what they will do. It’s not much bigger than my son’s RZR, and you can See everything nearly as well. Over the hood almost right in front of it, or watch the left front tire. The vision difference between it and even a 5 is large. You can pick your path well.
The 3A will go damn near anywhere
Except on the freeway .

Also, as I have posted before. Mahindra didn't build an brand new Roxor factory in the US just to sell low volume, so called side by sides. In my opinion, they very much have an interest in moving into the area the was fulfilled by the CJs, YJ and TJ.
There has always been speculation on the Roxor forums that Mahindra fully intended/expected people to try to get them street legal. Apparently a lot of the necessary wiring, etc for the street upgrades were baked into the vehicle, so that is pretty easy and/or plug n play for much of it.

I stopped at a dealer a couple years ago, came away with this impression:

$20k
Needed wipers, mirrors, top, etc (Northern Indiana)
Then could become road legal but too slow for highway
They had a turbo upgrade kit that could bring you up to highway speed..?
- apparently it is HP limited, not gear limited.
No idea how good or bad service parts would be to find / afford.

If Jeep or Mahindra addressed those things for the same $20k, I'd be all in.
Iirc the current model, that no longer looks like a CJ, has an automatic as an option and I think they changed the gearing to be better at road going speeds.

When they first came out, one of the auto sites (think it was Tracy's old rag) did a comparison to CJs. Apparently it's kind of a mix of CJ5 and CJ7 primarily, with some 3 in it as well, and a lot of parts are interchangeable.

Yup, those old Jeeps were running the same trails decades ago and did just fine thank you. A LOT less complexity, and weight andFAR more maneuverable. Basic 2 seater, rubber floors, basic gauges, manual trans, 140 ponies or so and 30 mpg’s—-Take my money?

Isn't the Roxor something like $25K, which means $6K gets you into an already road worthy Wrangler for $31K, and if people really want a strip down Wrangler, isn't it much better to buy a JK or TJ and go nuts, why would anyone want a "seriously strip down" Wrangler from the factory in 2024, is the factory warranty that important in a vehicle that would be meant for serious abuse?

And it's wishful thinking Jeep can even make a profit on a $20K Wrangler, there is a much better chance of "the name we cannot speak" selling Lada Niva here for $20K

 60 ponies- MB, 2-3A, 72 ponies- 3B-5. A couple more out of the Hurricane over time until the 160 hp Buick, that and the lack of a factory OD until the Warn was made optional were their biggest downside . This would fix those, too bad it appears to be Fake News, and I took the bait

I'm not sure where the price is currently on the Roxor, but when it first came out it started at $15k. Options could push it up to around $30k.

Mahindra's parts catalog originally included a full rolling chassis for the Roxor, iirc for like $9k, but last I knew it'd been removed around the time the litigation was happening.

The engine has to be emissions-compliant, and certified as such. Not to WWII standards.

Jesus it went up to $28K now, well there is the base for $20K, not sure if the base includes an engine and wheels.

Pre JL, the happiest day with my Wrangler was when the warranty expired, JL is a different dance.

For that money you could build a very nice and capable on and off road CJ. Without smog or other compliance worries.

I absolutely love the Lower 40. I want my 2-door to sit like that. So far mines only a Lower 35. Hopefully a Lower 37 by the end of summer.
