Welcome! Also from NY. I have been running synthetic line since 2016, at least 85' (3/8" if i recall right). My winch stays bagged (covered) in my Motobilt Bumper unless I'm on the trail so it's protected from the elements, Aluminum Hawse fairlead. I've never had issues with the synthetic line. The line came with abrasion guard on it- roughly 5 wraps of RED that goes around the drum, as a warning. Then black- stays up front by the hook to protect the line from dragging on things. Anytime we are winching, you see red- you STOP.
As for the solenoid: It's a good idea. I don't have one, but I need one. I've seen people wiring to Aux switches and that's Ideal.
