I'm old enough to remember when EV owners were asked to not charge their vehicles due to excessive demand on the grid.
No need to be old, just have a memory longer than 3 months :)

My personal opinion is EV is not the real solution. I think E-fuel or hydrogen is more of a longer-term solution. For any EV zealot that have an urge to persuade me, I already ear it all, so no point.

I got it, but I live in Ca. and Ca. being allowed to set it’s own CARB standards with 18 willing accomplices it essentially set the national standards, with rare and typically short lived exceptions like this 22 392. That went 50 state late 22 after all the non 50 state parts were used.

Quote was from Ca.gov- Governor Gavin Newsom
Any plan to move out ? I do not live in CA and I have the repercussion of your policy.

So in reality it's giving the Governments exactly what they want...If nobody wants to buy EVs then they stop selling ICE and people just have to find alternative means of transportation or even none at all. Which is their actual goal. Too bad that's all that can be said about that here if it's not too much already.
Oh you’ve done it, pal! Now you’ve really pissed off Big Brother, he’s coming for you, and coming inside your…….tech.

P.S. - Big Bro, I don’t know this dude, I don’t associate with him, don’t come inside my tech, please! 🙏🏼

The title of the article is hugely misleading. My takeaway was that they need to sell more EVs to meet their overall emissions requirements in the EU. If they can't, they must reduce ICE models to balance it out. Here is a quote from the article that sums it up “Stellantis needs to either find twice as many customers to buy its EVs or stop selling as many cars with gas and diesel engines”

That's the plan, Cowboy, if we continue the trend of the past 4 years.

Actually what would really happen is that the price of used ICE cars would skyrocket. Just my opinion of course.

The argument is that because most people live in CARB states, it's not economically feasible for most car companies to produce non-CARB and CARB models of their cars. So effectively, those of us in CARB states are forcing those in non-CARB states to drive CARB-compliant cars even if they don't want to.

I think there's a lot more to be said about nuance and why CARB even existed in the first place. It's probably fair to say the policies have been perverted a bit over the years to where we're getting idle emissions standards that encourage stuff like ESS, complicated DEF emissions controls on diesels, and overweight EVs that produce tons of particulate emissions by shredding their tires way more aggressively.

I say that all as someone who is fine with CARB and likes encouraging people to buy reasonable EVs or hybrids.
The EPA is derelict in its duty as an organization at the Federal Level. That's why CARB continues to exist and why other states have adopted the same/similar rules. At the root of this, I agree, CARB shouldn't exist (anymore). The EPA should be driving this.

We have things like ESS, EGR, and SCR/DPF and Hybrids because ICE has reached maximum cleanliness and efficiency while meeting increasing standards. Without significant investment and a resulting increase in vehicle prices we don't want to pay, ICE can't become more efficient nor can it reach increasing standards. And that's where it becomes important to consider other stored energy types for passenger transport because were are at a point where implementing those technologies has become feasible on a large scale.

EV'S will not save the world. The carbon savings including making the battery is only about 30%. This isn't much better than a non plug in hybrid. I suspect what's really going on is a desire by regulators to have zero tailpipe emissions. It's been their holy grail for decades.

Both the Federal and California EV mandates are subject to court challenges. We could have a new US president who is hostile to EV adoption.

Hostile towards EV adoption? Does Space-Karen know about this?

At the rate Stellantis sales keep falling, management may not need to make the decision to cut ICE production. Consumers will make that decision for them.

Here in N.A., Stellantis has fallen from 4th largest automaker in 2021 to 6th largest in 2024 - Hyundai-Kia overtook Stellantis last year; American Honda overtook them this year.

Things in Europe are not much better from what I hear.
