Im currently at dealer getting a TSB addressed and curious what the process is with map updates on new vehicles.

I thought I read in a thread here that you can get map updates for 3 yrs but was just told at the service center that the tech stated i have to contact uconnect and purchase the map updates. I just did a quick search and couldnt find thread. I use both google maps and waze but would like the map updated sin e it was already 2 yrs outdated when vehicle was delivered

What the Tech said is correct. You pay for Map updates when a map update becomes available.

Unfortunately, even when a map update becomes available, by the time it is released/is available, it is outdated.

Best bet is to just use Google Maps or Waze...

Appreciate the quick response, was having difficult time searching threads with phone while in lobby.

What I guess I saw that led me to believe that updates were free for 3 yrs was related to Mopar Map Care which if purchased gets you updates for 3 yrs in which I must have misinterpreted.... so not going to pay to update NAV at any time as Google maps and waze are fine --but occasionally find myself somewhere in the mountains on cross country drives where I forgot to download in advance and vehicle NAV has helped.

Those map updates from auto manufacturer's suppliers are a ripoff IMHO. We have had vehicles dating back many years with the factory GPS units, and the updates are always way more than they are worth. Maps do not change that much from year to year, so if you have a Garmin or WAZE, for instance, any anomalies will be corrected by those databases. I use a Garmin GPS and a tablet with WAZE when I travel. Additionally, my tablet has an unlimited data plan, which allows it to work, download, and update in real time. Our factory stuff is rarely utilized, as the programming in them is painful to use (at least for me).

My 2021 is coming up on 3 years in March. I get Uconnect spam occasionally urging me to update the maps, but I haven't and all the addresses I have programmed in are the same. Nobody's moved. If you have friends/family in a new development somewhere, maybe then the update would be worthwhile.

For me, it's a no go.

In-dash NAV is a relic - an artifact of the times before smartphones, circa 2007. If you can afford a car with in-dash nav, you can afford a smartphone, and should be using it for either Carplay or Android Auto.

I can't help but wonder how much cheaper our vehicles could be if the automakers actually kept up with stripping some of this stuff out.

It's similar to how Jeeps with the Advanced Safety Option have BOTH regular cruise control AND the automatic cruise control. Why? In what situation would it be better to use the old dumb cruise control as opposed to the new one?

For the amount of money paid for the Navigation option, the map updates should be free for a few years at least, the Navigation interface is dated and cumbersome, and at times downright dangerous to use.

outside of the breadcrumb feature the Nav is junk, especially considering the price tag, pretty much anything software related to the Wrangler is junk.

You never travel to someplace new? Yeah, that's sad.

But, of course, the built-in navigation is also pretty sad, especially when things like Google Maps are far better and update within a few days / weeks of a change. And those updates are free. The updates that I report are usually published in about a week.

Nope. Never go anywhere, never do anything, grumble, murmur, hrrrmph! :punch:

I've been driving since gas stations were giving away paper maps of states and even the entire USA. And I always got to where I was going w/o any navigation software. Driven to both coasts, Canada and Mexico all before cell phones, interwebs, etc. ?
