I do have a 3.6 and no my daily commute is about 45 min each way. Is the trickle charger a one time use or do I need to leave it on there daily?
Right now JC @R3D J33P, in the very short term, I see the trickle charger as neither for you. Instead, I see it as a diagnostic tool to determine if keeping your rig on a trickle charger while parked. makes the program go away. If it does then it's likely that your ESS battery isn't getting charged enough, and a replacement may help the problem go away (or not.)

If it doesn't, then it may also be the above, but likely also something else wrong too.

A trickle charger may solely attach to your main battery to charge both batteries as the 3.6L's batteries are connected in parallel while the rig is off (in fact they're, as per factory, in parallel at all times but for an instant at cold crank, and during ESS events.)

~~~~~~
I trickle charge habitually. If I don't ESS won't engage in my rig. When I bring the rig in for other things I'll have the dealer check this. I'm an infrequent and small trips driver, as much as I feel that FCA should not have designed a system that many owners also find is inadequate to keep the supplemental battery charged enough for the ESS system to engage as soon as other factors preventing it for doing so (e.g. cold engine) have been overcome. Most people in the know seem to believe that battery life is maximized by keeping your batteries at peak.
Although I have the A/C cord for the charger easily accessible, others here may rightfully think this charging both a pain and less than necessary. As long as the supplemental battery has enough power to cold crank**, ESS not engaging because the supplemental battery lacks the higher power threshold for ESS than cranking, to them is a feature. I see their point but believe ESS engaging should be the owner's choice, not the rig's.
**(The supplemental battery must have sufficient power on its own for a cold crank to be attempted. Cranking though is effective with both batteries in the 3.6L.)
I'm not an supporter of less than routine trickle charging. Others here may sight advantage for it other than convenience being the obvious one. :)
If the dealer solves your issue long term, not just by replacing batteries with ones that have the problem reemerge 3 months later, do share!
Had the same problem, a new auxiliary battery fixed mine.
Mark @Frontal : would you please share the timeline in your case? How long ago was the supplemental battery replaced in your rig, i.e. how long has this repair been successful for you, and are you a frequent high mileage driver or something else (as it relates to the alternator effecting the battery charge for you.)
Final question: did you opt for the bigger alternator that I believe is part of the optional tow package when you purchased your JL?
Thanks.
Hi Andy
I drive about 1K - 1.5K per month.
The problem with the ESS started 5 months ago, and the battery was replaced under warranty by the dealer 4 months ago.
The diagnostic tests showed that the aux battery was faulty.
Since the replacement (5 months) the rig has been fine.
My Start/stop started not working and I was getting the message that it was disabled while the battery charged so I’m at the dealer now and they are replacing both my batteries
My ESS stopped working--and trickle charging remedied this--before the following relevant thing I forgot to mention.
I run a dash cam 24/7. When the rig is off it goes into battery conversation mode where it will shut off if a certain user customizable voltage threshold is not longer achieved, likely though a threshold much lower (in 10ths of volts) at which ESS will enable.
This could play a contributory role in why ESS on my rig doesn't work until I've driven quite a distance if I don't trickle charge.
See...here's the thing with this.
I am torn hearing Mark's story @Frontal of relatively long term success with a new battery, that suggest it really was the battery, more than the system that was the culprit, and yours John @johnparjr which is oh so common report here in the dealer swaping batteries.
Are so many factory batteries bad or is it the overall design of the system? FCA claims to have tested this in all kinds of situations.
I hope yours truly is the factory batteries.
So according to the dealer paper the Aux battery failed and the main was weak so they replaced both
OK, normally I do not use auto start stop and I always push the disable button when I start the Jeep. But today I forgot and while at a stop light I let off the brake pedal the auto start stop chugs a bit and then I get this error message on my dash. Now as much is I am annoyed by the auto start stop I do not like error messages on my dash panel so does anyone know how to get this
resolved?
Hi JC,
Should you decide to visit your dealer, please feel free to send us a PM. We'd be happy to connect you with a Case Specialist to work with you and your dealer throughout your service visit.
WOW....sorry to hear that. Hope it gets resolved.
Got my Jeep back tonight and all seems well. They originally replaced the Aux battery, but the orange A malfunction/service ESS system light reappeared as I said above. They ended up replacing the clutch pedal interlock switch. Which probably was the cause of my starting problem rather than anything being wrong with ESS.
2 dr 3.6/MT, base sport, tow package, no mods, driving it about 1k miles per month.
So glad to find this thread since I've just started experiencing ESS failure to engage. After reading through the posts, I think that I will try the trickle charger trick before I decide to make a trip to the dealership.
Let me make sure I have this straight. You are offering novels of advice on the start-stop system, but forgot to mention that you leave a device plugged in and drawing power 24/7... but then you discovered that if you hook up a trickle charger 24/7, everything is fine.
It could not be more clear that in YOUR case the dash cam is the problem.
Unplug your dash cam for a week and see if your start stop issues go away. If they don’t, you most likely have a bad battery just like the OP.
There is no reason to plug a vehicle into a trickle charger unless you are driving less than 30-60 mins a month.
i too have an issue with my stop start .. bought my 2019 this past august and now December iv'e only put on 2078 kilometers. so i don't drive much.. the stop start worked for the first 1500 km no it just say's stop start charging... i have an appointment with the dealer next Tuesday, they said they need it for at least 4 hours, that they have to drain the batteries and test from there... and that i need to drive it more, i drove for an hour twice today with no change. how ever i did put my optima red top battery in it the first week i got it, just because i like the battery... i ran a separate 0 Gage wire from my alternator to my battery to help with charging. i've maintained my factory 8.4 head unit but i added a pac pro so i could run aftermarket amps and speakers.. while jeep is running i always show 14.7 volts never drops, while off it stays around 12.3 volts...
