Edit.... Wanted to add some photos for those considering this option. I forgot to add the two shelves are optional... and can be added or removed.

Also you will notice I purchased two combination locks option as it comes with keys and I did not want all kinds of keys. Combo locks work great as I had that on my under the driver seat of my TJ for pistol.

Thanks for the info. Where did you get the combination locks? Link? They look stellar.

You get those from Tuffy. They are somewhere around 15 bucks each.

I like the idea of the back door storage, but am concerned about the added weight on the
hinges. Is this something I should worry about, it would add 20 lbs plus the weight of the box

Like you I was worried, I with all my stuff and the metal box is 45 lbs. Not a problem and when door is closed box is supported by the floor so no hinges issue.

For me I wanted what I had in my TJ but Tuffy said no plans at that time 4 months ago. So rethinking that I did not want to leave things laying around with my top off, the box was a great idea. No regrets works for me, gun, tow stuff, D rings computer, iPad etc.

I have this.
https://www.tuffyproducts.com/p-578-tailgate-lockbox-jeep-wrangler-jl.aspx

Love it. I have top down a lot and store everything in it including my computer.

I tried the center console which is small and not to secure.

FYI on my installation I took off black rear trim on back gate and discovered I could drill two more holes in box and mount it more securely. Works great well worth it.

Under full disclosure you lose six inches of floor storage when gate door is closed and in my 2 door rubicon leaves no room if back seat is down. Not a problem for me but if you carry stuff in back and someone sits in back seat you have issue.
Does it rattle or squeak at all?

With the extra screws mounts no rattle or squeak. BUT hit a speed and all your stuff jumps up. I lined the bottom with some details clothes which worked.

The Tuffy looks like a better setup than the VDP vault. The VDP is a roto-molded tub that takes up a lot of the volume, leaving a very small storage. Either one could be defeated by a BF screwdriver or crowbar.

The Tuffy (JK style) is simply a large door over the OEM tub.

The VDP vault meets some folks needs but it sounds like you and I we just have too much stuff with us and do not like an open Jeep sitting as an invitation for others to take stuff.

Nope. Not a bit. I lined mine with rubberized tool box shelf liner.
O that a great idea... I just had a lot of detailing cloth... I guess I can get that from Lowes.... checking...

edit....

I will just use my wife exercising mat in pink....

Thanks for the idea...

A word of warning to those who will lock their keys in while off on a hike, swim, etc. The push to start function will still work with your key fob locked in there.
