In Florida, titles are electronic and held in the owners name in Tallahassee. If you want a paper copy, you go online and request one for a small fee. If the title is not free and clear, you are not eligible to request a paper copy. Once a paper copy of a title is issued, it is no longer an e-title in our free state of Florida. Other states vary greatly.

In MO we get our titles mailed to us right after it's registered and will have the lien holder if applicable listed on it too. When I've paid off my vehicles I go to the dmv and show them the lien release and have them removed the lien holder from the title. They will mail a clear title back to me. I do this if I ever trade it's nice to have a lien free title instead of trying to find a old lien release letter.

The lender sends the lien release notification to your DMV. They then issue you a new title and send via mail. It will take a few weeks.
This is how South Carolina handles it. You receive your clean title from the state

Paid off the JL the other day and I’ve received a letter from Chrysler Capital letting me know the loan has been satisfied. But it didn’t come with a title. Is this normal?
That will depend on your state of residence, as, per post #12, you've subsequently claimed to understand.

By way of example, here in PA, PENNDOT holds the vehicle title until the loan is satisfied. After receiving a release from the lienholder, only then will a hardcopy be mailed to the owner of record. He won't see the title document at all until the vehicle is paid off, nor will it matter who the lienholder is during the period that the loan remains outstanding.

Go to your DMV and get an updated title... The only time I ever seen an updated title provided when I paid off a car, was a couple decades ago when a friend used one of those title loan companies which actually took his original title at the time of originating the loan.

Hi all,

Paid off the JL the other day and I’ve received a letter from Chrysler Capital letting me know the loan has been satisfied.

Great. But it didn’t come with a title. Is this normal? When I’ve had new vehicle loans in the past, letters like that always came with a mailed title, but I’m wondering if Chrysler Capital / Santander sends it separately?
In Arizona you after the Lein is lifted you must get the title from the DMV. Not sure about other states though.

Update - took the lien release letter to the DMV who refused to accept it because it’s not notarized. Chrysler Capital pretty much said they don’t do that normally, but they are supposed to fax a notarized copy to the DMV.

Will see where this goes.

Different states are different. In Georgia they automatically mail it to you. In Utah, I took the pay off letter to the DMV and they gave me a title there…for a small fee.

You should go ahead and do it like others have said. You should always have a paper title…at least in my mind.

Locally here in my state, once the loan is paid off and the "bank" is no longer the lien holder, the state of Washington sends a new title showing me as the owner

I don't think you ever indicated what state you're in, but this can't be the first time Chrysler Capital has ever had to release a lien on a title in your state before. They must know what to do.

I received my title an hour ago from Georgia DOT or whatever they are called. Mu loan was paid off about a month ago. they havent send me anything, but guessing they notified DOT who sent me the title with no lien.

I can only speak of 2 states. In Indiana the bank holding the note retains the title and will eventually mail it to you once paid off, typically fairly quickly. In Oklahoma I had the title in hand with financial information on it indicating that it had a loan against it. I never saw what happens to the title once paid off as I moved back home from Ft Sill and re-plated the vehicle in Indiana and at that point the bank held the loan until paid. In both states it was the same bank, USAA, that held the loan.

The lender should notify the state DMV that the lien is lifted and you can apply for a title through the state. If the lender doesn't do that then the state will deny your title request. This happened to me recently on my older car. Its loan was paid off 11 years ago. I went to the bank, they finally found records that the loan was paid off and eventually sent me a letter. I went to the DMV with all of the paperwork and got a new title.

Many years ago I had paid off my loan and went to the local DMV to get a new title. They asked me for a letter and I told them that my bank doesn't give those letters. The guy at the DMV asked me what bank and when I told him he knew about that bank and went ahead with giving me the title.

I have had loans before where the bank returned the title when the loan was paid off but I'm guessing they don't want to have to store the titles now or they don't want to have to deal with the additional employee cost of digging them out and mailing them.

My point is that anything can happen. I would suggest going to DMV and applying for a title so you will have it in your possession if you need it.

Yep, this is exactly how things work in Florida. Electronic titles are the standard, I typically convert to paper but haven't on the Jeep.
