Hi all,

Paid off the JL the other day and I’ve received a letter from Chrysler Capital letting me know the loan has been satisfied.

Great. But it didn’t come with a title. Is this normal? When I’ve had new vehicle loans in the past, letters like that always came with a mailed title, but I’m wondering if Chrysler Capital / Santander sends it separately?

Different loan providers operate in different manners. As long as you have the original title and the letter you received stating the loan has been satisfied and released it’s all you need should you ever sell. If you want you can provide both those to your state dmv and get a lienless title but it’s kinda a waste of money as long as you got the letter stating release.

I was never sent or have even seen an actual copy of the original title. The dealer in Maryland (out of state) delt with it directly with the DMV. Obviously my registration references a title number. This has been the same for every vehicle I’ve ever owned while payments were being made.

I would call them up. You should receive one normally 30-60 days.

I may have to. It’s not been 30 full days yet. I just figured I’d they’d mail a payoff confirmation letter, the title would be in the same envelope.

Usually you get a title with a lien on it shortly after you made your purchase. I had one. Just paid the Bronco off recently and took the lien release letter and original title with lien to DMV in order to get a lien-free title.

Maybe this is a lender or state specific thing.

Could be. Here in NY I’ve always got titles with both financed and paid out vehicles. Only difference was the title stated “one lien recorded” if I financed. It’s always arrived around 45 days later.

The lender sends the lien release notification to your DMV. They then issue you a new title and send via mail. It will take a few weeks.

Not arguing you’re wrong, just a point- that I am 100% sure is state specific. My state explicitly states they get no notice from the lender.

Could be they send the title directly to you, then you take it to the dmv. Either way, I’d not worry.

In KS the DMV holds the title. When the lien is satisfied I have to go online to the KS Department of Revenue and submit my lien release. That initiates the title being sent to me. If I sell the vehicle privately I need the title, if I was to trade it in the dealer will get it themselves.

Here in Washington, the DOL ("DMV") issues electronic titles. When a lien is satisfied, you get payoff confirmation from the lender, they send a notice to the DOL to release the title. The DOL issues you a paper title and sends to your address on file via snail mail. The process takes 4-6 weeks usually.

Every state is different, but states that do e-titles generally work this way. Some states still deal in paper and your lender will hold the physical title, and they'll mail it to you, signed off so you can apply for a new title in your name only. The process still takes a few weeks to complete.
