2022 Jeep Rubicon JLU. At 17,000 miles get the Rear-Axle Locker caution light on dash, the locker switch is flashing yellow, the off-road page on console shows rear axle locked. I jacked up the Jeep and checked it was not locked, checked manual and latter found this group.
When I got the Heep into the dealership a few days latter, the light had gone off by itself one morning and dealership could not pull a code. The girl fixed herself, but I expect it would come back. Over the next year, had the light come on once or twice, but it was out by next morning. It’s a Heep after all!
Two weeks ago, now at 37,000 miles the same problem came back. Look at the video. I’m writing this so it may help you
to know what to expect. It won’t be a quick fix, mine took 10 days to fix.

Brought the Jeep into the dealership and this time the light stayed on a they pulled the code of DTCM.
C-1451-11 Rear-Differential Position Sensor Circuit Short to Ground.

Had to wait three days for a “qualified” technician to look at it, it was over the 4th of July weekend. I didn’t care, because I argued a loaner vehicle from the dealership. It is the same one I custom ordered my JLU from and bought the Platinum Warranty Package, I’m glad I did. Besides…I enjoyed blowing the doors of that Challenger they gave me as a loaner!

Once parts were ordered, it took three days to receive them:

68544629AA $318 Axle Sensor Kit
68400411AA $23
Plus lubricants for rear axle, because the sensor is inside the rear axle gear case.

Once the parts were received, it took less than a day to install and check, the Jeep was ready that afternoon. I got a look at the sensor (they wouldn’t let me keep it) and it was full of oil.

This is a known issue by Jeep, there is a bad batch of sensors that went into the axles in 21 and 22. They used to replace the whole axle, now there a these kits, but they need to be ordered from factory. There are 5 sensors in a kit, they only replaced the one, guess they kept the other. If I had paid for it, I’d have wanted them all, as it is, I was happy to get my girl back. Topless she is better than a Challenger any day!

The more you know, the less the dealership can try to snow you. You can look up the parts and diagrams on Mopar website, call the parts department ahead of time. Insist on a loaner, this will not be a quick fix, and it’s under warranty!

We had that happen while driving west on I-80 just east of Rapid City, SD, very concerning at the time In October’22 on our ‘21 JLURD. Stopped at the dealership in Rapid City, they said they’ve had 8 or more of them happen and the factory had forbidden them to go inside the axle, so they were ordering complete axles and replacing them, axles were taking months to come. We were advised not to lock our rear locker any more till repair, that was especially bad news as we were only into day 3 of a 3-4 week off road exploration tour of several western states. We later stopped at a dealer in small town Utah and talked to the service manager. He had heard about it and went about searching a fix and found out factory had come up with a fix it kit. He found out there was one in Utah and could be had overnight if I paid for overnight shipping, hell yes As our well planned and much anticipated trip had been much altered without the ability to use the rear locker.
The kit came in early the next morning and the dealer worked on it quickly, changing 4 sensors before the right one, manager said the kit had 5 sensors because the factory didn’t know which one was in the axle. Can you believe that, amazing how dumb the factory is. We continued with our trip only going in milder places and trails working our way back to Arizona. We went to the selling dealer in metro Phoenix and they suggested doing an overall inspection to their credit. After their inspection, I got to talk to the mechanic who also was their diesel specialist, he also told me about the soon to be announced recall on the high pressure fuel pump. As we were walking out, a salesgirl that had overheard that conversation said follow me, I did and we walked to the back of the lot where her own personal Rubicon was parked and dusty. She said it had been there for almost 6 months and the factory thought they’d have the parts in another 12 months. Great dealership and fine employees, what a company that owns Jeep. We like to explore on our own as it’s next to impossible to find others that have the time that we do.

There was not a bad batch, who told you this information? This has been a problem since day one starting with 2018 model.
I was told this by the guy in the parts department at the dealership.

Ya he was mistaken, it's a known issue. Happened to mine as well (I have a '22, I realize that doesn't disprove his argument). Happened to me on a trail, and then I couldn't engage the lockers at all. Mine was in and out of the shop in less than a day luckily. I somehow lucked out that my local dealership has great service.

Hi all,

Is the sensor replacement covered under drivetrain warranty? I’m past the 3 year mark and am getting the axle alert. Deciding to take or just get the z locker.
TIA

I don’t think it is covered, the Powertrain Warranty covers it, but I think you are over the 3year basic warranty
