I am a Grand Cherokee owner, and I remember some owners had this issue and talked about it on a forum. Check jeepgarage.org and search in WK2 forum.

A rock can easily be thrown forward by a vehicle tire. Whatever happened, it may be impossible to tell. Not sure why the default position is Jeep's fault.

It might be because: 1) there were no other cars for over 1/2 mile forward and back, 2) nothing was even near the glass inside the vehicle to cause any stress on the glass, 3) there were no environmental conditions that could have contributed, not even any swerves or turns in the road. Why would a heavy safety glass window on the rear of a vehicle EXPLODE?

I can't see any reason for this other than a MANUFACTURING DEFECT. THAT'S WHY THIS IS LIKELY JEEP'S FAULT.

Glass should be covered by your insurance company. Warantee won't cover the repair.

This is NOT a simple broken window. I am just about certain that a fault in my brand new $50K feels-like-a-lemon with all of the problems JLU is what caused this. My insurance company should NOT have to pay for Jeep's poor manufacturing.

That was a big problem on the model of F-150 I had that I traded for this JL. Turns out the rear defroster would malfunction and superheat the glass which would then randomly explode. It was so rampant on those trucks that owners started a class action suit but didn't get anywhere with it. This is the first JL I've seen that happen on though. Wild!

Yup! Gen I Raptors suffered from that. I remember disabling remote start automatic rear defrost because of it.

I literally had this exact thing happen to my JLU Rubicon. Picked it up on a Friday, on Tuesday, while I was accelerating from a stop, the rear window exploded with no apparent cause (sounded like a shotgun went off behind my head). <300 miles on my JLU Rubicon -built in July. No apparent cause. Got it replaced and have not had an issue since. Not sure if it was bad glass, bad install or bad luck... Luckily, no deductible in MN!

My mom had her moonroof spontaneously explode. It’s more common than you might think. Usually due to an imperfection in the glass during the tempering process.

Good luck proving that. No evidence of something else is weak evidence of a defect. That's circumstantial, at best. The hope would be that maybe Jeep is aware of a defect and helps you out. Slim chance, though. We haventh seen reports of these things randomly shattering, so there doesn't appear to be a pattern.

Insurance is your most likely successful path, barring a high deductible.

That's the only thing that makes any sense at all. I am taking it to a dealer on Tuesday and insisting on a warranty repair. The rock theory just doesn't make sense... when does a rock ever cycle backwards instead of forward? There were no cars in front or behind me for 1/2 mile, it was a flat, straight road... NOTHING HAPPENED and the rear window just exploded!

I have seen rocks kicked up by passing vehicles strike the rear of vehicles, but only at sub-25 mph speeds. Mainly at places where there's a line of cars waiting on a pilot car to lead them through construction zones. I would suspect either someone shot it out or it was one of the other two theories (defroster over heating / glass imperfection). Just my 2 cents worth. Hope the dealer takes care and you don't have to use insurance.
