Honestly, if you are leasing I personally would not get a sahara unless you're getting a sahara specific feature since the price difference is so big. You can get almost just as many features on a Sport S for not nearly as much as a sahara (leasing).

It's true that Saharas don't lease well because of their low residual. You can get a Sport S for a lot less. Or a Rubicon for about the same amount or a little less.

On the other hand, get what you want and enjoy your Jeep!

Yes, definitely true. Unfortunately, if you want Selec-Trac, you're locked in to a Sahara :)

Do you have the link for that spreadsheet? I would like to plug in some number for a sahara near me so I can get an idea if its even worth looking into... Thanks!

True! Might as well get what you enjoy because in the end no matter how little you're paying for your Jeep, if you don't like what you have is it really worth it?

That’s odd - I am sure that I uploaded a copy of the spreadsheet for editing... but now I don’t see the attachment anywhere (?).

I’ll upload another copy once I get a chance (on a mobile device right now).

Though, I’ll add that the best thing to do is to go to Edmunds.com and read their guide on how to calculate by hand.

I hear you and may have been hasty in my response but if you can finance at 3.5% form72 or even 84 months and sell the car for anywhere near the estimated residual value you would be way ahead vs leasing.
So in your example financing for 84 months makes sense

Too many variables. Financially you will almost always be ahead of you finance. How long will you keep the jeep? What money do you have to put down? How many miles will you drive it? How much do you want to pay each month? How good is your credit? All these factors may influence your ultimate decision.

One alternative it do a balloon auto loan. It is basically a loan that has lease like payments with a large balloon payment at the end. This can work well with a JL if it holds it's value like the JK has. And if you are planning to only keep your jeep for a few years. This doesn't have the lease acquisition/disposition fees and there are no mileage limits so you can conceivably mod your jeep also.

Ally offers this and some credit unions. I am Not advocating it but if used responsibly, it could be an alternative to a lease. And I don't know if there are extra fees. I have never done it. The Ally calculator will show the residual they use for their balloon loans: http://balloon.ally.com

Yes, Penfed has it too. Don't get caught with a big payment though after 5 years and not have the ability to pay it off.

I agree. This probably can work well for a wrangler because they hold their values so well. I can imagine some people have gotten themselves in trouble using this on a car with poor resale value.

But if you are already considering a lease it would be worthwhile to do a side-by-side comparison of lease vs balloon.

I looked into PenFed on this. They don't do it on Wranglers.
