Well, in preparation of my '26 Moab delivering, the '23 4xe has been sold.

$66k sticker price

$60k paid

$25k sold

Some serious depreciation! But, it is now in my rear view mirror!

After my wife and I left, she looked at me and said, "Can we agree to never buy another hybrid again?"

Congrats! Now repeat after me. "Lease a hybrid, lease a hybrid, lease a hybrid." You are welcome.

They can be good, they can be bad, they can be someone else's problem after 3 years.

Congrats!

Wrangler might not be the right platform for hybrid, and/or Stellantis might not know how to make the hybrid right.

In my opinion, hybrid makes a lot of sense for commuter cars. And its proven reliable for over 30 years.

I know the 4xe had unexpected problems but that sucks!!! I have owned ford raptors and jeeps since 2012. One benefit of both was a strong resale. That has gone 180 degrees on the wranglers, now including non 4xe models. Sorry you took that hit.

How many miles did it have on it?
Any vehicle after three years is going to have a massive amount of depreciation.
‘Did you sell privately or traded it in?
Now that Jeep has lowered its price of 392’s by 20k and most other trims anyone selling a Jeep now is going to take a loss.

My wife's 4xe Cherokee lost $40,000 in value in one year, 9,000 miles (luckily its a lease).

Don’t forget that Federal hood money in your math, though.

The government handed you, what, $7500 back in March of 2023? So if you’d put that in a boring S&P 500 index fund, that’s like $13k now, which you’d be putting towards the next Jeep.

The Federal hood money was also intrinsic to the depreciation you experienced.

The 392 will get you there much faster, so less time running the engine, and therefore less fuel used! You will actually come out ahead!!! 😉. At least it sounds good on paper!

That is the second mistake I made. I did not qualify for the government bribe because my tax bracket is expected to pay for all the government bribes, not receiving them.

I was taught to always buy because leasing is just throwing away money unless it is for business write off purposes. That thought process was SO wrong in this case. I had initially thought I was going to keep it long term, but the more I lived with it the less I wanted to hold it long term. Looking back, leasing would have been the right call.

what is even worse is, I was cross shopping the 392 at the time I bought the 4xe. I spend most of my forum time over at cj-8.com and I had asked opinions for both. I just was not honest with myself and had convinced myself the 4xe was the better financial choice. Ha.

Just under 38,000 miles. But to be fair, I started driving it primarily when I knew the values were tanking with the knowledge mileage was not going be a huge factor in the value. I figured it was better to put the miles on a vehicle about to be sold than one of the ones I have kept long term in my fleet.

Sold to one of the car buying services.

Trade in quote was $22k, Carvana was $23.2k.

I’m assuming retail will be $30k ish.

Meanwhile, driving a new 392 while gas goes to $6.00/gallon in 2026. Then again, that 392 power and exhaust sound has unlimited smiles per gallon.
Texas, regular is currently around $2.79/gal (up $0.30 from before war) and premium 93 is $3.39/gal.

But if cost of gas was truly a concern, I would not get a 392 and my wife would not have a ‘25 QX-80. But requiring premium fuel.
