My independent shop deemed this tire, a stock Michelin LTX with only 11K miles, unrepairable. The metal shard caused a 1/2” slice between the treads and the tire deflated within 2 minutes after puncture. I figured I’d ask here before seeking a second opinion from another shop. Thanks, guys.

The tire shop I use would probably patch the inside of the tire and glue the outside. They would not guarantee and make you sign a hold harmless agreement though.

That definitely looks repairable. Find a tire shop that will apply a vulcanizing repair to it and that spot will be good as new. They may be using the standard 1/4" rule to deem it repairable or not, which could be policy.

This isn't too far gone from the looks of it, but it may be difficult to find a shop to go outside the 1/4" of damage rule.

If it was parallel to treads, I'd think it was repairable as very few steel belts would have been cut. This one looks diagonal which means several steel cables are probably cut and could affect the broken cables hold under higher centrifugal force - faster speeds, perhaps 65+. If you don't drive on the highway much or at all, I might try patching it. Keep in mind a tire flying apart will cause a lot more damage than a new tire AND it may cause a wreck which will be significantly more expensive on the pocket and emotionally. Stores will always say no out of liability if its not a small patch.

If its not going to make you miss a mortgage payment, by the cheapest (reasonable) you can find and then replace all when the other 3 are down. Maybe even a used tire..

Since tires are a safety item, I would replace the tire. Even if the tire can be repaired (and I don't think it can be) does not mean it should be repaired.

I work at a shop and repair lots of tires. If that tire was on my vehicle, I'd replace it. If you look close, there is a crack propogating on the outer case from that slice. Technically you can vulcanize it but that doesn't address the outer casing that will continue to fail and thus the tread will start to come off. I just ask, for the cost of a tire, is it worth it to patch it (which is more labor than just installing a new tire) or just replace the tire so you have peace of mind? Trust me, you'll find a shop that will patch it. Doesn't make it right.

Hard to say w/o seeing the inside of the tire and the shape of the shard. You know nothing until you pull the tire and determine the extent of the puncture.

Sorry, it's really not a question of whether it can be repaired or not. It's a question of would you really trust driving it at highway speed after a cut that big was repaired??? Personally, I wouldn't.

My reaction is "hell no." I've enhanced the brightness & contrast on your photo. Look at the massive split in the tire that I've underlined in red. If that metal object is 1/2" then you must have 2" of splitting. Moreover, it's splitting in two directions at one point. This is way way past repairable.

I worked in a tire shop at one time too. That tire is trash. Punctures, think screws and nails, can easliy be repaired. Cuts can not. Even if it was patched form the inside, there is a very high probability that the cut would continue to tear or that it could cause a catastrophic failure/blowout.
