Hey guys, just reaching out in general to other JL owners to ask if this would be considered a normal amount of rust under the jeep? I do live in Canada with harsh winters, but this seemed very premature compared to anything else I've seen.
I've had many other vehicles all new and don't recall looking like this in just a single winter/9 months of ownership.
Currently not undercoated because the dealer would only do rubberized, and my Ram that had rubberized rusted like crazy so decided I'll do my own undercoating.
What do you guys think?

After a winter of driving in Canada ... yea I would consider that normal.

Normal if you don't do anything to prevent it.

I put a coat of Fluid Film on the entire underside every autumn (except exhaust) and it prevents that from happening, in spite of heavily salted roads in winter and driving on salt flats in the summer.

Depends. Does your part of Canada use unicorn tears, Elvis sweat and pixie dust to melt ice or salt?

I'm north and it's mostly sand they use but sometimes they put down salt with brine.
Yeah I'm planning to put the marine grade version of the fluid film (can't remember the name) in the fall as well. Just surprised how quickly and how rusty it got compared to other vehicles. My wife's qashqai at 6 years old looks same or better and she never undercoated. Same goes for my F150 (which is older but looks about the same).
Or maybe I should'nt have been surprised knowing it's a stealantis product.
Undercoating can mask the corrosion as well, but anyway I'll adding some this fall. Thanks for all the replies. Cheers all!

Yep I hear ya.
Just the surprise is that our other vehicles never did this even though not coated (with the exception of my ram which was literally leaving rust stains on our driveway at only a couple years old). The Ford, Nissan, and my dad's yaris all fine with much more years and lots of miles. I'm more surprised by the comparison.

That's normal, DO NOT use any sort of rubberized undercoating or anything like that. Traps moisture and makes it 10x worse as you have experienced. We live in NE Ohio and deal with the same thing. Coat as much as you can in fluid film, lanolin oil, wool wax, Krown, surface shield, or any of those type of products. We have many local shops who do this for $100 or so. My local shops uses Krown which has kept our vehicles looking new for 10+ years. Also Krown is known well in Canada according to their website.

Yeah Canada blows for car ownership. You can't have nice things. Just potholes and road salt. Not the main reason I left, of course. But its up there.

Actually, what about Maine, upstate NY, VT, NH, MN, WI, ND... oh nevermind. :P

If you live in the Rust Belt—basically anywhere north of Tennessee—I highly recommend rust-proofing your vehicle.

We originally took our 2020 JLUR to Ziebart, but after going down a bit of a rabbit hole, I realized there are better options. For our 2026 Ram I6, we switched to New Hampshire Oil Undercoating (NHOU). We went with their Boss Wax Hybrid, which comes with a lifetime warranty on new vehicles as long as you get it touched up every two years.
The reason I moved away from Ziebart is their "hard coating" method; if that shell cracks and traps water underneath, the frame can literally rust from the inside out.
My Jeep still looks good with the Ziebart touch-ups, but they only offer a 10-year warranty.
There are also great DIY options like Fluid Film, Woolwax, and Blaster Surface Shield. These are excellent because they "creep" into tight spaces and actively stop existing corrosion. Of course, if you’re just leasing, you probably don't need to worry about it!

Looks like you garaged it with salt on it. That's the problem with garages in the winter, they are warm enough to allow the salt to do its damage.

If you go crawl under a brand new one at the dealership, you will find most of those spots lacking a useful coating on them whether paint or otherwise.

Jeep does a terrible job with rust management. Other manufactures do not have this same issue. Its sloppy and disappointing.

Contrary to what others say, putting anything over the rust will not stop the rust from continuing underneath the spray. I suggest getting rid of as much rust as possible before spraying.

First i would crawl under and sand / grind off as much as possible, using goggles, a wire brush and sandpaper. Then I would give it a couple sessions of Rust Converter. Do this when there is no chance of rain, so the active chemicals do not get washed off.

After 2 or 3 sessions of this, i would apply some etching primer and after drying for a day, apply some flat black Rust paint.

Then I would take to Krown for some spraying, I would also have Krown spray again in October before next winter.

I live in Toronto, and our roads are some of the worst for salt/sand use. I also religiously wash the jeep and underneath during the winter months, (at least once a week). I suggest you start doing the same.

My Jeep looks nothing like yours after three winters.

Keep an eye on it in the future and tackle any missed / or recurring spots. I know it sounds time consuming and expensive, but if you want to enjoy your jeep for a longer period of time, you will have to maintain it.

Best of Luck...

Billy

Do you take your jeep to Krown AND wash the underside? I take mine for Krown in fall and then go all winter with no under spray. In spring I thoroughly wash the underside.
