I rented a SUV over the weekend that had a turbo in it. first time driving one and quickly noticed how sensitive it seemed to be at the green light; press it a bit and its slow to accelerate but once you breach a certain point the thing takes off like mad. I get why its doing it but never realized how much of a difference it made.

is there a trick to this or is this normal?

Turbo lag, the turbo has to spool up to make boost. The newer vehicles have addressed it with for instance 2 smaller turbos, plus different designs for singles although with them top end flow can be a trade off, hence twins on higher performance engines. …….
Anyway- turbos suck, yeah I know, supercharger guy should stop whining. 😁

that....both explains a lot and doesnt help at all.

a supercharger is just a turbo before there was turbo isnt it...
A supercharger is a mechanically driven air compressor, turbos are exhaust driven.

I won’t swear to it but I believe SC’s were first. Used for aircraft to increase altitude. I was a radial engine aircraft mechanic, our low altitude cargo planes were supercharged only, high altitude bombers using the same R- 4360 had turbos feeding the supercharger. Top end 30’s , (maybe some 20’s) cars like Duesenberg and Cord had SC’s, don’t recall any turbo ones.

wait - the turbo sucks air out to speed up intake? neat. sounds like a better input is the way to go if we had to make a choice though no?

Turbos are more common these days with direct injection motors. In the last 6 European cars I’ve owned, turbo lag was virtually non existent.

Depends on the application, SC’s give instant boost so the best for drag racing, turbos are better for road racers where they are always spooled up and more efficient not using hp to run, just increased exhaust back pressure.

whats a supercharger?

Super chargers are a forced air system which is directly connected to the engine adding parasitic drag directly to the crank shaft to drive the compressor that pushes more air into the intake.

Turbo chargers are powered by turbines in the exhaust path, and add parasitic drag to the engine indirectly through back-pressure on the exhaust. Conversely though they are harnessing the thermal energy in the exhaust to drive the compressor that pushes more air into the intake.

The big difference between them is that the turbo charger is more mechanically efficient, but because it's relying on flow it is less responsive than the supercharger.

The increased exhaust back pressure does cost HP to run. But it costs less than the mechanical supercharger.

superchargers FTW!
ive owned 4 supercharged vehicles and 2 turbocharged. both are awesome but i prefer superchargers. turbos are much more complex systems. i prefer the instant torque of an SC
