Brand new 2024 Willys 4 door 3.6 auto soft top here. Theoretically, my vehicle is rated at 23mpg highway. I only have 400 miles on it so I realize it's a brand new engine and mileage should increase a little once it's good and broken in, but I'm guessing this thing will never see 23mpg on the highway. Not with these heavy 33" tires and a 4.10 rear end. Maybe a 2 door sport with street tires, but not this Willys. Are there any 2024 Willys 4 door, 3.6, autos getting 23mpg on the highway? My work commute is all highway, 23 miles each way. I tried to hypermile it the other day. Didn't go over 60mph. Averaged 18.7mpg.

1) Too early to say - you need a few thousand miles to break it in. Everything from the engine to trans to axles are still "tight".
2) Weather makes a difference
3) Traffic and hills make a difference
4) Be sure your tires are properly inflated

Beyond that, it is what it is. Perhaps the EPA number is an average across all models, including 2 doors, and with milder tires? I don't know if they run EPA official tests on every single combination of tire, engine, trans and 2 door/4 door to get to those numbers. It's possibly and average and you have the one which is worse.

On my JKs (both) with 33s and 4.10s, I;d get 22-24 at 55 MPH on flat terrain. I have not tested that on my JLUR X with 35s but I suspect I can prob get 22 on flat terrain at 55. Anything over 65 and it drops fast.

Something to keep in mind is that your dash is going to be lying to you. If you want accurate MPGs you going to need to measure at the pump.

Here's a prime example:

If you were to trust the lie-o-meter, You might think that I'm getting 27 MPGs...

But when you do the math:

341.1 ÷ 14.848 = 22.9727909482758

Equals almost 23 mpgs.

So if you want accurate mileage, make sure you're measuring at the pump and not trusting your dash, because it's full of shit!

Here's another example:
That's quite a bit off. When I had my at the time 18yo diesel Excursion, which I traveled with frequently for work, I found that on average, the digital gauge was only about 0.5mpg off from my hand calculations.

I get what you're saying about the eco diesel. However, I paid $2.72 for regular yesterday. The diesel was $3.69. That's a 35% premium. I averaged 18.7 mpg the other night. I'm hoping that gets better as it breaks in. With the eco diesel, I'd have to do better than a 35% increase in mileage to be ahead of the game. That means, I'd need to be getting 25.2mpg with the diesel to break even. Anything above 25.2 would put me ahead of the game. Of course, there was, I believe, around a $4000 up charge for the diesel engine. So I'd have to make back that cost as well. Then there's the maintenance and the def fluid I'd have to buy. You've gotta love the diesel for the engine itself. Overall, the numbers just don't add up. Overall, it's a more costly setup.
You have to use Gas buddy to find the best Diesel for the best price.

Here were Im at prices are all over the place but one local has Regular at $4.39 and the good stuff Renewable Diesel $4.29.

I was checking for fun and BJs in Providence has Reg $2.72 and Diesel for $3.07. Where Im at I can find Diesel cheaper but with Gas Buddy.

That's why I always get annoyed when people on this forum post their MPGs and then have a photo from their dash as if it's somehow magically accurate. It didn't get the term "lie-o-meter" on the RAM forums because it's accurate.

It varies how much it's off by, but as you would imagine, it's just Jeep trying to make you think it's getting better mileage than it is. It's all marketing bullshit basically.

Unfortunately there's a lot of people around here who are just simply too lazy to do the math themselves. I've at this point, given up hope and anytime you see an MPG thread, I'll usually pop in, post my shit, and then duck out before I get annoyed with all the bullshit photos of the dash.

Ours is a 2018 JLR, 8 speed auto, 4.10 diff ratio, with no other weight added. Plus we removed the rear seat. 35 PSI cold in the factory tires. We get over 23 mpg on highway, but under that around town.
