Brand new 2024 Willys 4 door 3.6 auto soft top here. Theoretically, my vehicle is rated at 23mpg highway. I only have 400 miles on it so I realize it's a brand new engine and mileage should increase a little once it's good and broken in, but I'm guessing this thing will never see 23mpg on the highway. Not with these heavy 33" tires and a 4.10 rear end. Maybe a 2 door sport with street tires, but not this Willys. Are there any 2024 Willys 4 door, 3.6, autos getting 23mpg on the highway? My work commute is all highway, 23 miles each way. I tried to hypermile it the other day. Didn't go over 60mph. Averaged 18.7mpg.

If you had the 2.0 you probably could but you're not going to with that 3.6.

Not if you own an EcoDiesel it's not.

We regularly hit in the mid to high twenties if you're driving the speed limit, and if you're driving over it like I do, you still average 22 MPGs.

There's only about a 5 mi stretch on my drive into work every morning where I keep it about 65mph because there's lots of state troopers and no lights on the highway with which you could see them. The second I hit McKinney Texas, it's fair game. And I'm usually going 85+ mph for the next 14 mi before I hit my exit. And then in the evenings when I get off of work, I'm usually doing a couple 3 mi stints doing 90 mph depending on traffic levels. Somehow I still average 22 MPGs. ;) :CWL:

Got to love the EcoDiesel!

The 2.0 has pretty good MPGs on average, much better I would say then the 3.6.

The 4XE has trash mileage for anything except electric only. If you're using electric only on the 4XE, then you're going to be getting some pretty good MPGs.

392 and good MPGs are not synonymous, not even worth mentioning.

3.6L isn't bad, but you're not going to be doing nearly as good as the 2.0 nor the 3.0. from what I've seen people on here saying, you'll probably be getting closer to 17 to 20 MPGs at best.

I will say, no matter your engine option, 55 mph seems to be the sweet spot for getting the best MPGs possible. That right there is the speed I was driving when I got my 500+ mile 33mpg tank way back when (EcoDiesel obviously).

there is a reason there is a song titled I can't drive 55. It works. You'll die from being rear ended, but it works

The computer will tell me I can get 26 miles to the gallon...the problem is it's only at 45 mph.

Something to keep in mind is that your dash is going to be lying to you. If you want accurate MPGs you going to need to measure at the pump.

Here's a prime example:

Jeep Wrangler JL Is 23mpg a pipe dream? 1000004834

If you were to trust the lie-o-meter, You might think that I'm getting 27 MPGs...

Jeep Wrangler JL Is 23mpg a pipe dream? 1000004835

But when you do the math:

341.1 ÷ 14.848 = 22.9727909482758

Equals almost 23 mpgs.

So if you want accurate mileage, make sure you're measuring at the pump and not trusting your dash, because it's full of shit!

Here's another example:

24.4 mpg on a long stretch on the way to vacation last year however there was probably a long stretch of net downhill on the way there or it was flat with a head wind on the way home as i didn’t get those numbers on the way home.

I really don't understand people's obsession with gas mileage. What I understand even less is why folks who are inclined to obsess over gas mileage would buy a Wrangler. It's the equivalent of a calorie-counter adopting a McDonald's-only diet.

I get what you're saying about the eco diesel. However, I paid $2.72 for regular yesterday. The diesel was $3.69. That's a 35% premium. I averaged 18.7 mpg the other night. I'm hoping that gets better as it breaks in. With the eco diesel, I'd have to do better than a 35% increase in mileage to be ahead of the game. That means, I'd need to be getting 25.2mpg with the diesel to break even. Anything above 25.2 would put me ahead of the game. Of course, there was, I believe, around a $4000 up charge for the diesel engine. So I'd have to make back that cost as well. Then there's the maintenance and the def fluid I'd have to buy. You've gotta love the diesel for the engine itself. Overall, the numbers just don't add up. Overall, it's a more costly setup.

If anything I'm more pissed at the government for letting automakers get away with putting outright lies on window stickers.

I've had cars that easily beat the window sticker I've had cars that get exactly what the window sticker says and I've had cars that get less than what the window sticker says.

The problem with that is the only vehicles that I've had that get less than what the window sticker says happen to be Jeeps.

Every single one of my other vehicles is either got what the window sticker said or better and none of them were Jeeps.

Obviously there's a disconnect somewhere.

Well, I'm not obsessing over gas mileage. My other vehicle is a Bronco and I had four 4Runners. I've been getting lousy mileage for many years. I'm just wondering why Jeep officially rates my vehicle at 23mpg and I get far less than that. All my other vehicles got pretty much what was on the sticker. My Bronco actually beats the rating. I'm guessing Jeep just rates an overall average for the 3.6. I'm sure a light, 2 door soft top sport with street tires and a higher rear end could do much better than me.

So you got to keep in mind, a good 30% of my fuel tanks are spent going 85+MPH. If I keep it to the speed limit, 70 mph, I average 26 MPGs. If I do five under everywhere, and keep it to a max of 65 mph, I average 28 MPGs.

I just don't care enough about my MPGs to not drive fast. So in your instance, an EcoDiesel would actually save you money and you'd get a lot more miles out of each tank. Again as long as you're driving the speed limit wherever you live.

I used to live in Connecticut, I think the max speed limit around there was like 65, so you'd be right in the mix of amazing MPGs if you had an EcoDiesel. 😎

I give you that, maintenance is definitely much more expensive. I mean gassers don't have fuel filters. However everything else is about the same cost on average. I mean I changed my oil every 5,000 mi with a new oil filter and a k&n reusable engine air filter, oil cost me about $40, the oil filter cost me about $11, and the air filters reusable so for $51 I can change my oil every 5,000 mi. I only do the fuel filter every 10,000 miles and that only costs $15.

Don't forget too, The 3.6L have spark plugs, the EcoDiesel's don't even have those.

In general I'd say maintenance between the two is pretty much a wash. Not enough differences in price unless you're buying top end stuff which you don't need to do to maintain an EcoDiesel.

App?

You mean if the odometer is accurate?

That 33.45 mpg run I did was on factory tires.

I guess I probably should have quoted my entire post instead of just the bit that I did. Here you go, you can read through my whole post if you choose. It's extensive but it outlines exactly how I got those miles.

friends-joey-tribbiani (2).gif

So I've always had good mileage with my EcoDiesel, averaging 24 MPG lately. The most I've ever achieved was 26 MPG on a trip from Dallas to San Antonio and back.

So lately I've been messing around with the goal of trying to achieve the highest MPG I can on my EcoDiesel. On past full tanks of fuel I've been running 65 miles per hour max, with little to no idling. I was still getting 26 MPG.

One day a week ago I was just lazily driving home at 55 with cruise control on on the highway. I just filled up my tank and I noticed my Trip A timer was saying 30 MPG.
IMG_20230406_165332877.jpg

I had screwed up that tank, so I ended up filling back up to a full tank super early and for the last 4 days I've been running with a max speed of 55 mph, and I've noticed that cruise control increases my speed super efficiently without that heavy pull you get when you press the gas pedal slightly with the EcoDiesel. So I've been running pretty much anything over 20 mph on cruise control. I have a 20 mi drive to work everyday, I'll be in the slow lane going 55 with traffic passing me like crazy on our 70 mph Highway 75. I do the same thing in the afternoon with the whole lot more traffic on the highway, 55 mph on cruise control in the slow lane.

I'm still pretty early on, only about a hundred miles in, but if I keep this up, even if I get 30 mpg, I'm looking at about 500 plus miles on one tank of fuel.
IMG_20230407_122830630.jpg

This was taken in the neighborhood I live in. No suspension upgrades, OEM MT tires which come on the Willys Sport, aftermarket Icon Rebound Pro rims, next to no weight in the rear (gutted my interior) of the vehicle, an extra 250 lb (steel bumper and winch) in the front of the vehicle. I've been running it with 35 PSI cold, goes up to about 38/39 psi warm.

I'll keep you updated as I cruise through the rest of this tank of diesel. Though I'm hoping to achieve at least 30 MPG, ideally higher.
