Should I install the Injen Cold Air Intake?
Will I get better performance and mileage?

i definitely hard core off road including water crossings. Many people say the CAI is a bad idea for true off roading enthusiasts. That it would be bad for the engine by sucking more hot air and dirt into the motor while off roading.

Are the benefits with the Injen closed CAI real or is this a bad idea?

pros and cons?

thanks guys

For my two cents, I don't see an issue with it. Supposedly their CAIs are dyno tested and do add HP - probably a very small amount - and will also change the tone. I have one on order. I don't think it's any better or worse water or dust wise - idk your engine, but the 2.0L already has a CAI. Injen's does have the ability to be snorkeled, but if I was going that route I'd probably get the Rugged Ridge snorkel so I didn't have to cut the hood.

I think people say that Cold Air Intakes are bad because most of them are very poorly designed and dont actually do what their name suggests. The Injen one is sealed from the engine bay and looks to seal against the factory pre chamber against the fender but its not doing anything in terms of getting you cooler fresher air over factory. It will have a larger filter which ideally will allow better flow but its going to be marginal over factory at best because it uses the same air source as the factory air box.

what if I added the rugged ridge amfib snorkel with it?

Tbh that was exactly what I was thinking. You'd have to find a way to match the top of the Injen CAI to it though. Maybe by buying the lid for their snorkel mod and fusing them together?

After reading every Cold Air Intake thread that crossed my screen (because I had thoughts of buying one), I've determined that they are most effective at lightening the buyer's wallet. A mild change in intake tone and the claimed ability to add 7 additional horsepower, but only near/at wide open throttle, does not make a strong business case for this rather pricey accessory.

More to the point, the factory airbox design doesn't get all of the credit that it should do. The air intake itself is fairly well-protected, vis-a-vis the Wrangler's mission brief. As mentioned, most CAI kits draw from the same air source. This fact either (a) invalidates the claim that a CAI feature is actually being added, and/or (b) invalidates their MSRP since the owner has already paid for this particular feature, courtesy of the air intake design installed at Toledo.

As Check Engine Light codes have been authenticated to occur when the included oiled conical air filters are used in some Cold Air Intake kits, that was enough for me to pass on them.

I can see your point on most of this post, but this was a big one for me. Made sure to buy a dry filter. My previous trucks before the Jeep were both S10s, and the second one had a K&N CAI with an oiled filter. Numerous CELs and grumbling/cutting out at highway speeds.

Although a snorkel does obtain air from outside of the engine bay, they are typically only used when someone plans to ford water that will crest over the hood line. They seal the box so the snorkel opening is the only air source (instead of a supplement) and its a relatively long path for the air to follow preventing them from being considered a CAI alternative.

The only true benefit from almost all these CAIs is a bigger filter element which should allow for slightly better air flow at higher rpm as mentioned. Other than that you need to start adding ram air to reap any sort of benefits. Thats what you are seeing on the 392 JLs as well as our H.E.R.O. Hood.

Take your old stock air filter element and unfold it. I believe you will find it has several times more filter area than a typical "CAI" cone style filter. CAI filters typically have more free flow because they allow larger particulates through.
