Great insights! There’s another scenario I probably should engage the handbrake. At a big intersection when the red light stays very long, I normally shift to P while still foot on the brake. As I’m thinking about it, I probably should shift to neutral and pull the handbrake, relax my foot.

Well...in my youth I didn't wear seatbelts, rode in the beds of pickups and went swimming right after eating. I suspect that the parking brake danger is not exactly the Sword of Damocles. There is SO much more to worry about. :)

I'm 46 years old, when I learned to drive, my dad told me (with foot on the brake) shift to neutral, apply handbrake, put it in park. Been doing it ever since with every vehicle.

Am I the only one who's been driving so long that they remember when the "hand" brake was engaged with ones left foot? [And you twisted a handle 90° with your left hand to disengage it.] You also flashed the highbeams with your left foot.

I learned to drive in a Chevrolet wagon that had a hand-operated parking brake. Pull out the handle to engage; twist 90 degrees to release and retract.

One's left foot was reserved for pressing the small floor switch that operated the high beams.

My dad always uses the handbrake, I can always remember that engaging sound when he pulls up the handle. I was just too smart to remember what he told me.

Wow, that I didn’t know.
The only vehicle I had with foot parking brake was a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2. And I made the same mistake by pushing that parking brake paddle after shifting to P and shutting off the engine.

The parking pawl is rated to hold the vehicle along with a maximum tow capacity trailer on a steep slope. I forget the test angle they use. My 4th gen Ram had a tow capacity around 10,000 pounds. On the 5th gen they upgraded the parking pawl and increased the towing capacity to 13,000

From what I read:

If your vehicle rolls forward or backward more than an inch or so after placing the shifter lever into ā€œPā€ Park, the parking pawl may be badly worn. If your vehicle rolls more than a couple of inches, or rolls freely, after placing the shifter into Park, the parking pawl may be broken.

I’ve never liked the clunk it makes from park to any gear if any weight is on the parking prawl. So even if i live in miami my sequence is
-from drive to neutral while foot on break
- apply hand brake
-release brake and let vehicle weight settle on parking brake
and then finally go into park.

In the off chance I park on a hill or parking garage and someone hits the jeep or something happens to the parking prawl id rather that weight hit the parking first.

Never. It's called a parking brake for a reason.

Or handbrake, e-brake, emergency brake, auxiliary brake. It has multiple uses.

Owner's manual also specifically states multiple times that the parking brake should be applied before shifting into park, so not sure what's dumb about this thread. I also have a bad habit of using the e-brake after park, even though I've always done the opposite when driving a manual.

I learned to drive with a manual and spent most of my life driving a manual, so really never even thought about shit like this with an automatic and statistically, most people in the US don't even use their parking brake at all.
