I've had some comments and messages so just to set things straight I am not paranoid, I'm not pissed it's there, and I wasn't loosing any sleep knowing it was there somewhere before I actually found it. This is more like getting the cool toy in the egg machine. Just another Jeep easter egg LOL. I feel accomplished. They can still read my vin number from a satellite so there's that.

Has anyone considered repurposing this for something useful? OR maybe harvesting it for the electronic components? ;)

Imo, if this was a legit telematics box installed by Jeep at the factory, I wouldn't be too bothered since such activity is disclosed to the consumer to a certain extent. On the other hand, if this was a 3rd-party tracker installed by a dealership (which appears to be the case), then I'd be a little pissed that they're installing aftermarket crap in your vehicle without your knowledge or consent, regardless of its purpose (in the same way I'd be pissed if they etched my vehicle's windows or added dealership decals without my approval, unless it was a lease).

Maybe refer it to your local news station’s “investigative reporters” team? ? Jeep dealers can’t be the only ones doing this. The general public should know more about this practice, really.

I hope with the removal it does not prevent end-user from getting future OTA updates to their 8.4.

That functionality should be (is) built into the 8.4 and the PCM. I recently had the entire interior pulled out of my Jeep and found no such device, yet I have received multiple OTA updates over the past 3 years.

Keep your pitchforks and torches and outrage against tracking handy when you use Gmail, Google maps, Microsoft, Facebook, You Tube, Chrome, Edge. Most proprietary software.

Alexa, do you pinky swear that you aren't always listening and recording?

I agree wholeheartedly about the tracker found. Just injecting some whataboutism for excitement.

Gotta run now. Have to chase some kids off my lawn and shake my fist at the sky.

Wouldn't that functionality be tied into the stereo or ECU instead of just a random tracker placed in the door?
Yes. this has been installed by the dealer. It is common and they do it to get an insurance cut. Cars get stolen from dealerships all the time. The dealer I bought my Jeep actually disclosed to me there was one installed, and pointed me to the company that managed the tracking so I could use their services if I wanted to. I got home and unplugged it because it was draining my aux battery.

Living with Paranoia is a choice. If big brother wants to track us they can do with our cellphones. Stupid to track us from our vehicles that can be driven sporadically and by different family members.

If our data is being tracked by national security it is being done so by algorithms, since the amount of data would be exponentially massive and complex to be managed at a personal level. If you truly want to avoid being "watched" the only way to do so is by living off grid with no access to the internet, phone, nothing.

To answer several at once:

I have the 7” stereo so don’t have GPS.
This was a custom order. I have read dealers install this.
pictures attached. Found straight forward of the door plug behind the panel.

you DO have GPS. just because you dont have the big stereo with the map future doesnt mean you dont have GPS.

I've installed these types of trackers for various reasons in the past (I was 12v installer at a custom stereo shop) and like others have noted, if you don't pay for the service its relatively simple to remove it without harm. All of the normal OTA functions of the radio should still work without it in the vehicle.

I know when I went to look at a JL back in Jan of 2018, they tried to charge $2485 ( i have the spred sheet that lists $2485 in aftermarkets) and said that it included a gps tracker.

I walked out.
