Can you folks tell me what this underhanging fang/guard is guarding? I really want to cut it off but I'm hesitating. (take pity on me, day two of ownership)

That's a mount for the skid plate to push debris and obstacles under the sway bar and tie rod. I wouldn't cut it off. I would find a skid plate that's compatible with your bumper.

Weird, I always just beefed the tie rod up to take the hits... I'll poke around for a more compatible version, thanks!!

You can cut it off if you want a lot of guys do….but it’s there for skid plate… also if you ever get resi shocks it’s a good place to mount them… I left them on and got the skid plate that goes with my bumper…..

Cut it off? You can just remove the two bolts and it falls off. I left it there as it does not bother me much.
I believe the bolt we are looking it is for mounting the OEM bumper and removing them will not remove the whole piece. The front part with the "X" pattern on it comes off but you'll still have 2 arms hanging down. I would just leave it in case you ever want to mount a skid plate or something else like Roky mentioned. At least something riding high might bump that before hitting the important bits.

I personally put a steel skid plate on.

I can see that the skid comes off easy but the two fangs are welded to the frame. I'll dig for a plate down there

Those two backets, one on each side, are factory welded to the frame. I imagine a piece of heavy gauge square tube bolted/welded across there would take some hard bashes.

Yea. That part you're talking about just gives some metal support to the oem plastic skid plate. The "fangs" are the actual structural components.

I took off the sway bar disco skid, rotated my sway bar motor to tuck it up higher out of the way, then cut half the "fangs/horns" off with a Sawzall.

I have yet to hit my sway bar motor on anything, and if I do, then i'm doing something pretty damn stupid like driving straight into a bolder lol.

I chopped half of mine off for my bumper and flipped my sway bar motor up and out of the way. It gives it a much cleaner look not having the frame horns.

Looks like this is a rough country bumper, no skid for it... bust out the grinder and welder baby.
