Just waiting on the RK tie rod and drag link to become available for my next project.
Please, I’m only a 3. I didn’t comprehend a word of that. Could you please woman-splain that to me?
??

Wait…is that even a term yet? Do women do that to men? Or to each other…?

20 years ago, very close to a 4.
As I get older, pushing down to a 3. I just don't have patience for the serious stuff. And time available vs. budget pendulum swings toward a 3.

I'm getting better at drinking a beer while watching someone else do the work.

I've done engine swaps, custom standalone EMS wiring and tuning on applications that hadn't been done before, designed and fabricated power adder setups, built transmissions, rear ends, custom suspension work, fabricated exhaust systems, designed exhaust resonators, some body work but I outsource paint (for now)

I am a mechanical engineer raised by an auto tech who owned an automatic transmission shop. I've been working on vehicles longer than I can remember. I design and fabricate my own parts for fun.

Me too, but the electronic shitshow in these Jeeps scares the crap out of me.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
I'd say #4 for me, but since I just turned 60 I'm ready to take it down a notch or two, there's just some things I don't really feel like doing anymore. But I can get a second wind if it keeps me out of the FCA shop :)

Does having a manual transmission simplify what's under the hood at all? Of is It an oranges to apples comparison?

Yes, it is something we do. It's called explaining it to a man twice, him being surprised, when really, it's the second time she's explained it.

So minimal electronically it doesn’t matter.

A 4 if the job interests me, a 2 if it seems mundane and or still under warranty (Oil changes and tire rotations for example - I know how to do it but it’s too easy, covered by my warranty and having warm oil run down my arm isn’t my idea of fun, lol ?).

Discount can rotate the tires all day long, but I’ve resorted to changing my own oil in the Jeep and Ram because “quick” lane here is 4 hours.

There’s a lot less arm runnage in the Jeep. The 5.7 in my Ram was designed to miss the pan.

I'd say high 3. Haven't done much on engines or transmissions, but I'll happily change oil, brake pads, bleed lines, rotate tires, change a rotor, wire a stereo, and do basic upgrades. I'm pretty comfortable figuring out anything I can get done within an afternoon and a couple beers.

Most of that was on the beater I had before my Jeep, and fortunately in my first few months of ownership all my work has been on upgrades. I certainly plan to learn more and I'm in the process of upgrading my tools, lately I've been eyeing a welder to fabricate basic stuff like skid plates.

I rounded up to a 5, but only for direct engine swaps.

I'll rebuild a motor, manual transmission, or tcase, but I'm not into bore/stroke modifications and all the variables that go into it anymore. I have tried and failed with a regear on my Toyota pickup, but that was over 20 years ago.

Also, I hate computers and fuel injections if they aren't tbi.

Maybe I'm a 4.4 then instead of a 4.5.

If we're talking across the board mechanical ability with fixing/building things, I'm back to a solid 5.
