it was -18 degrees this morning in Saint Cloud, Minnesota - Roughly 70 miles NW of the Twin Cities. Today's high is -9 degrees. As I post, the current temperature is -11 degrees. Calm winds, though. It's not so bad if the wind is calm . . . add the smallest amount of wind, and the windchill drops considerably! Our current "Feels Like" temperature is-21 degrees. Just another day in Minnesota and it's business as usual. No mosquito bites today!

Wind chill is such a stupid thing news agencies do nowadays. As if -16° wasn't already cold enough, they got to tell you the wind chill, which only affects you if you're going outside without protective gear on.

Meteorologist: "It's -16° outside, BUT it FEELS LIKE -40°!!!"

Guy1: "So how cold is it outside then?"

Meteorologist: "Well it's -16° outside, but if you were to go outside without protective gear on, and the wind were to blow in your direction, with moving airs heat wicking properties, it would feel like it's -40°."

Guy1: "My neighbor is fat as ****, weighing in well above 400 lb, if he goes outside is it going to feel like -40° with all that blubber on him?"

Meteorologist: "Well it differentiates between individuals. Person to person, wind chills will feel different depending on a number of factors."

Guy1: "Then why the fuck would you mention it?!?"

Meteorologist: "SENSATIONALISM! Stupid Americans won't watch our program if we don't produce ridiculous numbers! If the weather isn't giving mind bending, abnormal temperatures, people stop watching!"

I'm a big believer in the feels like temps. In summer in AZ 105 feels like 90 here in DFW and feels like 140 in Miami. 20 in Western SD feels like 45 here and minus 37 in Dumas Texas. Everything feels worse in Dumas, especially winter.

Been saying this for years... Wind chill is a construct invented by meteorologists to catch people's attention. And now they have the "Feels like" temp, which is just rebranded windchill. They talk about it much more than the actual temp, so much so many people think it is the real temp.

Interesting note, pointing to how stupid wind chill is. ~25 years ago they changed the scale to how wind chill is measured; they added 20 degrees to the scale. So what is now -20 windchill was -40 back in the 90s and prior.

The funny thing is, I'll still be wearing shorts to work tomorrow!

You'd fit right in here in MN then. Back in the day when it was cold, people dressed accordingly. Nowadays... If you go out and about you're sure to see a few morons (not talking about you) in shorts and sandals (with socks of course, because it is cold ya know).
