So I was heading into town to Sam's Club and decided to run off-road for a few minutes (State Land is right next to my house). So I threw it in 4WD and had a little fun in the sand. But..........I left it in 4WD and hit the road.......20 minutes to the store on a freeway.

So how screwed am I?

As long as you weren’t doing any tight turns in a parking lot all afternoon, you’re good.

Whew, ok, thanks.....It has no issues at all, I just always heard that you couldn't run in 4WD above like 45 mph....

I noticed it when I went to turn into a parking spot and the tires acted weird....

Normally shouldn’t SHIFT to 4wd above 45. You can run faster once you’re in.

If you are having a hard time getting back into 2H your drive line is bound, back up in a straight line for a short distance to unbind (take the load off the drive line) and it should slide right back into 2H

You can run part time 4WD above 45 mph, it just isn’t considered safe in adverse conditions. Any turning of the wheel can cause a loss of steering because the inside front wheel will spin/slip, and then you are only steering with one wheel.

You were feeling that effect when you were turning in the parking lot. The inside wheel was trying to go the same speed as the outside wheel causing your drivetrain to bind. The wheel finally spun on the pavement, releasing the binding and making your Jeep lurch around. Then the cycle repeats.

99% ok, but don't make a habit of it, especially at FREEWAY SPEEDS on dry pavement!

Another vote for "you're fine".

It's harder on the driveline than having it in 2wd and not something you want to repeat if you can avoid it. But hey, we all learn.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but related question:

I "exercise" my wife's 2019 JL Sport in 4WD low only on dry pavement around our neighborhood once a month as it was my understanding that this helped make it easier to shift the transfer case, and help keep the relevant moving pieces of the system lubed up. Never go above 45 and never do 4 high mode.

I'm ok doing this, right? Is it necessary?

BTW, thanks for the answers to OP question, this was a concern of mine too.

In general, you do not want to use 4 low on dry pavement, you definitely do not want to turn in 4 low on dry pavement.

If you want to "exercise" it, you can drop it in and drive a few feet in a straight line.

Sorry, I screwed up my highs and lows...senior / newbie moment...I do 4 high when I exercise it, NOT 4 low...thanks for the reply and helping me catch my error!
