So I have created routes and dropped some pins for my trip. I can see my online work on my Gaia App...do I need to do anything else to be able to see my routes as I am navigating trails? Do I need to download maps?

Thanks.

You need to download the area you will be in in case you don't have cell service.

I really struggled with Gaia a couple of weeks ago. I wish there was a "Gaia for dummies" or somesuch...

So is download the same as syncing? I do see a spot that has download as GPX, KML or GeoJSON...if that is it which should I use?

In the app, up top, hit the plus sign and “create area” will be an option. That’s what you want.

The GaiaGPS app works a little differently depending on whether you have the Apple or Android version. I use the Android version, so that's what I'm familiar with. "Syncing" will just sync your downloaded maps, waypoints, routes, and tracks between devices so you can see them on the web version and other devices. Your tracks will show up, but if you are in an area without cell coverage you may not be able to see the map you want.
An easy way to make sure you have an appropriate map downloaded is to go to the track "details" page, and click on "download map along route". That will download tiles for whatever map you currently have selected along the entire track, and will be viewable even if you don't have cell service. As far as a map choice, "Gaia Topo (feet)" is usually pretty good.
You do have to have a paid Gaia subscription, not the free version, for this to work.

That’s a good one I forgot about. Probably a lot of space saved. If you do go exploring, I’d save the whole area…just in case. One might have to detour.

Thanks all for your assistance...I think I got maps downloaded on my android phone using the app. I should be good to go if I don't have cell service.

Did you pay for a membership? That's the other thing- you have to pay for a membership in order to download maps that can be used even if you don't have cell service.

Yes. I did during the winter and started building my trail routes. But was struggling with the download. I have now downloaded some areas and tried downloading the area when I pull up a Route. See which works better.
Thanks

If you are asking about which map layers, the Gaia Topo (feet) will show just about all the trails around Moab. Just be sure to set the zoom level as high as possible if you have enough memory. For some of the more desolate areas here in southern NV, I also load the US Topo layer which has a lot of the old mine and ranch roads. The Mines and Minerals layer is also great for exploring if you're into that.

I got the cheapest membership which only allows download of the basic GAIA topo map. It worked fine for my trips around Moab and Capitol Reef. I could download a very big area into my old iphone6 that probably has the minimum memory capacity. The mines and minerals layer does sound interesting though.
