You pay taxes when you register the vehicle in your home state, and can use this to your advantage if you know you’re moving.

Bought a 2021 Tacoma TRD Pro in Kansas while I lived in Michigan, got a temporary tag that had 60 days before expiration, relocated to Dallas, registered the vehicle there and paid Texas sales tax on the vehicle.

When I traded that in for my Wrangler I bought at Gupton, same thing applied except the temporary tag from Tennessee was only good for 30 days.

Note, I'm not asking about sales tax, it's this from Gupton:

"We are required to collect our local city/county business tax"

Gupton did not collect local sales tax from me since I was not from Tennessee and the vehicle would be registered elsewhere.

I think I paid like $30 for a temporary paper tag, which made sense.

If I recall correctly, that local tax was under $50. This was from when I bought my 4XE last June. I actually asked about it, as the numbers didn’t completely add up. Daniel explained it. This was not a sales tax like what most folks think about as being required to register in their state. It was more a transaction tax that they collected on every sold car.
