I've been vocal about the plastic fuel lines on modern vehicles for some time. I think it's gross negligence of the manufacturers. It's what makes a little burnt wiring fire into a fully engulfed fire in seconds.

Here's the fuel line from a 2024 3.6L Gladiator. All plastic, except for an inch or two where the quick connect fitting goes near the back of the engine. This line is in close proximity, if not contacting the engine wire harness across the back.

To put "modern" in context, we're talking like starting at least 30 years ago when automakers started using plastic fuel lines. GM F-bodies have had plastic fuel lines forward of the firewall since at least 1993.

I'd love to see information on where our JL fuel lines are made from a vegetable byproduct.

I guess the right lawsuit hasn't come around yet. Amazing that they haven't changed this in 30 years. You'd think insurance companies would figure this out after decades of total loss fires.

Other than the random mechanic that told OP his fuel lines are made of "vegetable matter", I doubt there is any information generally available to support the claim.
Given the mechanics apparent lack of understanding of how fuel lines have changed over the last 30 years, I'd not put too much stock in his opinion.

However, it’s common for automotive manufacturers to use Fluoroelastomers (also known as FKM or Viton) in various parts of the fuel system due to their excellent resistance to high temperatures and chemicals typically found in modern fuels.

I really don't know what people are bitching about. What are they expecting them to use instead of the hoses in use today? Ridged stainless steel pipes?
That would create a whole host of other issues, not to mention the knock-on affect of increasing the price due to the parts and taking a lot longer to install.

That's how it was done a long time ago, along with flexible fuel-resistant rubber hoses which would dry out and break down. Apparently this was somehow "better", never mind the corrosion, drying/cracking, and rust issues. Most of those cars now seem to have a janky plastic inline fuel filter with over-tightened screw clamps positioned over an exhaust header now anyway. But who am I to judge...

PTFE, FKM, Nylon have been used in automotive fuel systems forever now. It seems that there was an opportunistic alignment with hatred of climate agenda and a very hungry squirrel so the OP could tilt at windmills online.

Squirrels, like geese, have become so used to people doing nothing to them, that they basically will walk right up and smack the taste right out of your mouth after wrecking your vehicle ?

While this is true to people, the dogs have a different approach. The dogs will chase you and if they catch you, which happens a lot, they play a game of tug-o- war and well the dogs always win, the squirrels not so much.

Well, I suppose that places us on par with the spontanius-combusting electric vehicles.

The fuel line on a 2023 is made of a vegetable matter.
Yep.
I surmise this is in part due to trying to "Go Green", but I digress.

Guess what likes to chew on vegetable matter????? Squirrels, that's what.

Guess what happens when you take delivery of a new jeep and have the dealer spray undercoat for beach, salt, sand protection and a chewed fuel line sprays gas all under your jeep? The undercoat comes off, runs down and stains the road, driveway and whatever else it drips on.

Guess what has taken my dealer 3 weeks to fix???? My damn jeep, that's what.

Ain't that something?!?!?

Oh well. More time to eradicate the tree rats.

Just FYI.

I should be getting her back today. They had to drop the trans to get fuel line secured into place. This keeps getting better and better. ?

I know this is a joke but I freaking hate leather seats. If leather was so good then how come we have to spend so much money cooling it and heating it and everything else to make it actually worth sitting on? I contend that it makes a terrible covering for seats or anywhere a human wants to sit for that matter. Seriously we need to come up with something better.
