Do any of you have experience with the new Cherokee 4xe? If so, please weigh in.

We had a 2016 Grand Cherokee diesel that my wife loved. It was comfortable, quiet, peppy, and fun to drive. It also got better than 30 mpg. Sadly, we sold it after six years because the performance and fuel economy were ruined by the government-mandated reflash.

We replaced the GC with a Lexus RX400 hybrid and my wife is bored to death with it. She said, “I’m old, but not that old!”. She misses her GC.

We drove the new GC 4xe and liked it, but a nicely loaded one is about $79,000 — which is about what the electric BMW X5 costs, and it performs better, has a much better warranty and service plan, and provides nearly twice the electric-only range. We’re struggling with the choices, so any experience-based input would be appreciated. (The BMW drives great. Powerful, agile, fast, fantastic brakes… and the one we drove was well loaded and about $5,000 less that the Grand Cherokee we liked, but my wife really struggles with the stigma associated with driving a german luxury car. She doesn’t much like the perception baggage that comes with the Lexus either... It was keyed in her first month of ownership — par for the course here in Oregon — so she’d prefer something with no associated “status”.)

No direct experience with the GC 4XE, but we did look into a GC Limited. I know this may not be that helpful, but the honest truth is that we (wife and I) found the GC to be lacking in features for the price. We found that there was nothing particularly special about the GC. My wife even said that she thought the new styling was "meh". You even stated that the BMW you looked at for $5,000 less than the GC has more features. Coming from three previous generation of GC, we have moved onto another vehicle brand (I still have my JLU).

The most optioned GC has every feature I can think of except for fully automated driving/parking, including many features we don’t want. The problem is, like TV channel packages, getting the one thing you want may require getting a bunch of expensive crap you don’t want. Remember when the “Limited” trim package was the top whiz-bang trim package available? Now ”Limited” has suffered the fate of Ford’s “Lariat” truck package, falling from the top to near the bottom…

The “Overland“ package we drove was comfortable, well appointed and peppy. It had all the options we wanted and more, but the Monroni sticker was about $79,000. If that produced BMW-like electric-hybrid performance and economy it would be an easier sell, but I gather the good fuel economy is only on shorter trips, and I’m struggling to figure the cost of the nightly electricity draw. At this point I’m not sure the electric piece pencils out.

I dont have direct experience with Grand Cherokees, but from other 4xe forums the Grand Cherokee 4xe is very similar to the Wrangler 4xe. It has a sport mode that uses both the ICE motor and electric motor together which wrangler 4xes dont have. $79,000 is alot tho. Not sure the delta between 4xe and regular Grand Cherokees but for that price id be going full electric.

Well the last time I drove home from Orlando I had a Grand Cherokee 4Xe driving alongside me. We cruised together from Daytona up I-95 through GA and about halfway through SC when I had to pull over to get gas... He kept going....

Seems like a good road trip Jeep to me!

Something to consider, with the IRA, you'll need to review income requirements for the Tax Credit at purchase. If you don't qualify, it's likely worth considering leasing to take advantage of the pass through. I'm not sure, but I think BMW pockets the credit on some of their models and does not pass through. Chrysler Capital should do the pass through. At $7500 plus any local incentives you have in OR, may make a significant difference in pricing.

Also, not sure how low BMW dealers are going, but you should be able to factory order in the neighborhood of 5% below INVOICE on the GC. The combination of the two may put the GC ahead by five figures.

When an overpriced BMW costs less, you know Jeep prices are out of touch with reality.

I’m not fond of the new Grand Cherokee styling, either. The outgoing model looked young and sporty. The current Grand Cherokee screams “Look at me, I’m a rich, middle-aged, undersexed mom...”

Just my two pesos.

Nah. Bronco still comes up a lot more often than Grand Cherokee on here.

Gotta agree. From this old man’s perspective it certainly looks like Jeep has delusions of grandeur and adequacy. I know all new vehicles have gone nuts on price, but Jeep seems to be one of the worst IMHO. My BIL bought a new X5 and took delivery in December. It’s an incredible vehicle. Great power, smooth and drives great. Build quality appears WAY above anything I’ve ever seen from Jeep and it was a LOT less $$$.

Follow up. Checked the list, looks like BMW does not offer the TC Pass Through on the X5, just the iX:

BMW Financial Services

  • BMW i4 eDrive35
  • BMW iX xDrive50
Chrysler Capital

  • Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
  • Jeep Wrangler 4xe
OR has two rebates totaling another $7,500, but both vehicles don't appear to qualify for $2,500 due to MSRP pricing, and the other $5,000 has an income limitation.

A family member is the original owner of a 2012 Jetta turbodiesel with the so-called factory cheater tune. He has received, and ignored, any number of mailings that offer no-charge reflashes at a VW dealer of his choosing. He knows from perusing any number of related forums and threads on the subject that the new tune would functionally cripple the vehicle's admirable fuel economy and performance.

I'm honestly not trying to rub salt in the wound, but hopefully you weren't truly forced to have your WK2 reflashed, to its detriment.

⚠There is another item to be penciled out- Insurance- before getting my 15 GC I also checked out comparable X5’s, one a year old was ~the same price and seemed like a good idea. Fortunately I checked with my insurance, more than double.

My understanding is that the tax credit is available if the PHEV is assembled in the USA AND the couple makes less than $300,000, but I'll have to confirm before pulling the trigger.
