Got LSD ? Got question for you

DID your JL factory LSD required additional fiction modifier to oil already containing it ?

Hello,

Looking at doing my axles oil change and I'm wondering: The peoples who did it in the JL and got the factory Limited Slip Differential what oil did you put in and did you need to add some friction modifier to the oil ?

trying to know if I can get away with just the standard friction modifier included in most oil or if I will need to "top it off"

Thanks

The best way is to go to a parking lot and do a bunch of very tight figure 8 turns. If you hear chatter, it needs more friction modifier. Add until it stops.

What axles do you have> M186 and M220? Recommended for JLU Sahara w/limited slip is a gear oil with the specification "75W-90 GL-5" that includes a friction modifier additive. Check the label, to verify it has friction modifier in it.

Ya just wondering if the oil itself will be ok or need to add some extra friction modifier.

Yes, the manual say API GL-5 and next line say: Models equipped with Track-Lok Limited Slip Differential require a friction modifier additive.

So here I'm seeking experience from other factory LSD owner to see if the GL-5 is enough or I will need to top it off.

You need to use an oil with friction modifier in it. Either get oil with the friction modifier in it from the manufacturer, or add it later. Prettying simple.

As stated above: is the oil with friction modifier enough or I will need to top it off with additional friction modifier ?

This is really specific to your axle and how worn your clutches are. Generally you don’t need to add more friction modifier, but no one can say for sure. If your question is should you bother to purchase friction modifier in advance of changing the gear oil, I probably wouldn’t.

Thank you, exactly what I was looking at.

Any limited slip compatible gear oil should work. I personally use Mobil 1 75W-140

buy an oil with the Friction Modifier in it and forget about it.

the factory LSD doesn't do much and won't last long anyway.
