I bought this rig new (2022 model) and it has just under 25,000 miles on it. I’ve changed the oil every 5,000 miles and use Penzoil Platinum Euro 5w-40.

Today, while draining the used oil pan I noticed glitter on the bottom of the pan. I tore into the filter to examine the element and found a few very small bits of glitter which bordered on the size of a flake (subjective conclusion).

I would not have seen any of this had the sun not been shining directly on the pan while it was vertical (draining). Furthermore, I usually drain oil into a closed container (think auto parts store drain tub with a plug in the middle) and would never have seen this just pouring oil out of it into the recycling tank. Also, I didn’t clean the pan before using it today and have drained oil into it from my Ram Cummins engine, but the tiny bits in the filter element lead me to think the glitter may have come from the Jeep.

Sorry, no pics and I didn’t use a magnet on the glitter.

I don’t do oil analysis but think I’ll change oil again in 3,000 miles and send a sample out for testing. I know these are more for trend analysis but figure it’s worth looking at to see if something looks out of whack.

Any thoughts? Anyone else experience this?

Thanks

Not good at all. I too would do an oil analysis. Keep us updated.
Is it still under any warranty??

I had that happen on my Camaro ZL1 6.2L V8 at approximately 800 miles. It was noticed in a blackstone analysis. It cleared on the next report. I would send an analysis in and see what's going on with wear metals, just to be safe. Blackstone recommended 100 miles to send in another sample. The funny thing was I caught the dealer using "Euro" 0w/40 vice DEXOS ESP 0w/40. I had that oil drained and refilled with recommended oil. Here is what they said:

"We noticed some very fine metallic glitter/debris in the sample bottle this time, so that's
something to pay attention to. The microscopic wear metals look good -- that's the scale on which our spectrometer reads metals, so visible metal usually goes undetected in testing. In any case, the visible metal may not necessarily signal an issue for your V-8, especially if it runs well. Maybe it's due to lingering products of break-in since the engine's still got very low miles on it. No immediate issues stand out in the current data or emerging trend. Just check back in ~100 miles".

That sounds like a potential serious problem! Hopefully your factory warranty will cover whatever is failing.

Thanks for the replies. The power train warranty is good for another year or so (5 yrs or 100,000 miles). I think I’ll change oil again sooner than 3,000 miles and send a sample for testing. I’ll report back here with results.

I’m torn up about this…….I love this Jeep with the diesel.

Glitter in the oil typically indicates the previous owner was a stripper.

Keep an eye on it and do another analysis in 3k miles I would suggest. If it is indeed a bigger problem it will show up again for sure.

In my experience, you will almost always have some metallic particulate in the filter. It's particularly obvious in the direct sunlight, both in the filter pleats and the oil. But, how much particulate and how large is "normal", is the real question. If you suspect a problem, keep doing used oil analysis.

Yeap. Happened to me years ago.

Have you been camping in the forest lately? Maybe the previous owner?

It is a fairy infestation.

Fairies are really hard to kill. Your best bet is to feed them raw iron, but youd have to mix it with honey ale so they go for it.

Ill go ask my daughter. She is an expert.

Good luck

drop your changes to 2-3000 miles and visually inspect. Probably just some wear off a part as motor is still quit newish. My bet brass something.

Is it running well? If so, wait until the analysis returns before you get too concerned.
