Gas cap tether too short?

If I were to do a locking cap (I don't bother, no teenagers around me), it would be to prevent people from putting stuff in, not taking stuff out. Siphoning gas is silly but not the end of the world, it's when people (normally kids) are malicious without realizing their little pranks can cause engine failure.

I hear ya Steve. But for me, not that I know anyone tempted to do this to me, it ain't simply the gasoline they may take out: siphon deterrents and all, it's the deliberate crap they may pour in to destroy an engine.

Well you need to put a whole lotta stuff to cause any real damage. There's fuel filters and strainers that should eliminate any chance of engine failure, but yeah sometimes people really suck. They just can't help themselves by sticking stuff into other people's holes when they know they should just stay away and only look.

100 bucks for a locking gas cap? that is outrageous. fca can take it and shove it up there tooshies. LOL. i mean for a plastic mold that is quite high plus keying it if you are not capable of doing so or do not have the right tooling. i mean i have stainless steel locking caps (dual tanks) on my 76 gmc build that cost me under 50 bucks for both and they're where keyed alike. thats kinda sad plastic is so much. just my two cents. might as well take a chance on missing a few gallons a fuel when i get out to my jeep.

I hang the cap over the door on the tether. It stays out of the way there.
But, I agree that a longer tether would make it more convenient.

I’ve been simply placing the gas cap over the top of the gas nozzle. Haven’t really given it any thought until this thread.

People are very sensitive about the length of their tethers. I blame the media.

A pita? I don't know how they expected flat bread to hold on to your gas cap. Good thing you took it off. I hope it looked as delicious as this.

Using the same measuring points as Steve, my tether is just shy of 7" (6-7/8" via a ruler).

Steve, you could make a new hole in the plastic housing so you can bring the attachment point forward giving you more room to work with. It obviously wouldn't make the tether longer, but bringing closer to the door should let it hang out of the way of the fuel pump better.

Oh lookie here.. one of those guys that just has to brag about how long his tether is.

That wouldn't work for me. The tether is shorter than that. Doesn't reach very far at all. They must have run out of tether plastic. I just need another inch....that's what she said. :cwl:

This is the length of the tether I have. You have to hold the gas cap to the side just to fit the pump nozzle in. Unacceptable. I'll see if the dealer will replace it as a warranty item.
