I have the locking hood and gas cap. I plan to keep mine a long time so a minor cost. Mine is in the garage most of the time but I'm old enough to have experienced gas theft back in the 70's when prices jumped and no vehicle had a locking gas cap. We'll be at $4 gallon soon (California laughs) and I'll bet the guys checking car doors late at night might begin targeting the very few known models that don't have locking gas caps.
@dsgrey

Back in the day you could siphon gas from a car/truck.... yup....

But .....Have you tried to siphon gas out of a JL or JT. As far as I'm concerned, installing a locking gas cap on a JL or JT is wasted $. Go try and siphon gas out of your JL... Good luck with that.

Unless you are worried about someone putting something in your tank then a locking gas cap may be something you want/need.

I was kinda wondering the same thing, good to know that it would be too much a PITA, even at $6 per gallon!

The JL has the anti-rollover valve like all vehicles these days..... these valves also act as a siphon prevention device, so it is pretty difficult for the average nitwit to steal the gas via siphoning. It can be accomplished but very difficult and time consuming.

So, locking cap is not necessary / nor useful, in regard to gasoline theft. Yes, it is a deterrent of sorts that will keep nitwits from pouring who knows what into your gas tank, but that is pretty much it.

Most gas thieves today just drill a hole in the gas tank, take what they want, and let the rest run out on the ground.

I lost over 100+ gallons of gas in 2004 when nitwits drilled a hole in my Class A, RV's gas tank. Oh, I had a locking gas cap on that RV.

Or they just stick a knife or screwdiver in it. All modern fuel tanks are plastic. Why bother with siphoning? Doubt many know how to do it these days anyway.

Would be a bad time not to have a garage :(

I will actually be in the market for some sort of semi-secure locking gas cap if my Hydro ever makes it to Tennessee. Maybe there isn't such a thing, I haven't looked yet.

Sadly, tho I live around Mayberry type towns, many Wrangler drivers are (justifiably) not held in very high regard in these parts.

I see a high protential for vandalism, be it the random soda thrown on the seats, gum, snot rockets, lugees, etc.

While the gas cap certainly won't stop all that, at least they can't easily sugar the engine if the gas port is locked.

So does Pennsylvania. ;) We've the 3rd-highest motor fuel taxes in the nation. Premium fuel (90+) breached $5/gal. last week. As I use Saudi Select in both the Jeep and my Ural, that's the grade that I benchmark.

Running my JLU's tank down to 1/3rd now costs me >$50.00 for a fill-up.

Viewed proportionately, that's about as costly as the $80.00+ that I was spending to fill up the tank of my K1500 in 2008, when Premium was selling for a then-record $4.25/gal. or so.

Today I pumped 19 gallons of ethanol free for my outdoor power equipment. $76 at 4.25 a gallon! I figured I’d better get it now.

My Jeep and truck are parked in a steel shop/barn at night and in a non public secured area by day.

If someone doesn’t step up and start making tough, sound decisions, it’s only going to get worse. It’s just a storm though, and they all pass

Either get the $100 Mopar one with another $40 for the locksmith to key it or a $20 one and deal with another key that is a little chintzy one, not a high security key like the Jeep key. It should be a one time expense so I sprung and will never have an extra little key to lose or damage

Yesterday I got a MOPAR locking gas cap off of Amazon for 73$ and keyed it myself in 20 minutes after watching a Quadratec video.

I wasn’t as brave as you, took a look at all the pins and little springs and took it to the locksmith before I made a mess of it ?
