Just curious if any one has mounted some form of backup camera as a front facing camera, I just bought a Garmin Overlander for trail navigation, it can use a wireless backup camera, was thinking of installing one up front instead

I don’t see the point of a front-facing camera. I get out of the vehicle, analyze the terrain, pick my line, memorize terrain association details, then I drive. Barring that, I use a spotter.

A front camera seems...lazy.

For some maybe, but I can see a use when on a steep incline to able to see what is at the top could be useful. There also times when one does not have a spotter, but then again to each his own

Understood, and I apologize. I was out of line. Anything to keep you safe is very good. I was being too dismissively old-school and in military mindset. I’ve literally had to go rock-crawling in a HMMWV by myself in Ft. Bliss/White Sands/Mcgregor Range. We didn’t have cameras, sometimes we didn’t have an A-driver to spot, and we had a time hack to meet. We did what was SOP in those situations and there were zero accidents or damaged vehicles. I’m not explaining this as an excuse; only explaining my mindset on this issue. I am sorry.

no worries, the Gladiator has it as an option just made me think about it. I had my Landcruiser for 15 of its 21 year life with no backup camera of any kind never backed into anything but it became much easier to avoid all objects after I had one installed 5 years ago.

Also, a high-mount dash cam recorder will give you a real-time picture on its integrated screen. The screen is small, but it’s easy to get used to.

That is an interesting idea but I also think I could mount my go pro on the bumper bar and monitor my phone, both ideas would certainly be esiewi

What is different in the gladiator that allows it to use a front facing camera?

Michael
There is a camera integrated into the grill, with water squirter to keep it clean. I’m sure it’s integrated into the uconnect system, probably hard wire or WiFi.

Probably FAR cheaper to implement, too.

That’s funny; I had a Land Cruiser FJ40 as a young man too. I also traded in an FJ Cruiser for my current Jeep. What model was it?

1999 Landcruiser 100 series, bought new in 98, by far the most dependable well built vehicle I ever owned, just gave it to my younger daughter and her husband last week.
My wife grew up in Venezuela, they had one FJ40 stolen bought another, then recovered the stolen one months later so ended up with two, wish they had kept one to have it restored.

I have no idea if this is an option, tho an expensive one probably, can you simply purchase the Gladiator camera? At least you would know that it will work with your current hardware. Good luck:like:
